Check Out Megan Dickerson’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Megan Dickerson.

Hi Megan, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I grew up in a small Texas town where the smell of sugar and cinnamon always meant something special was happening in our kitchen. Some of my earliest memories are of watching my mom and grandmother bake for our family and the local community. At the time, I didn’t realize how much those moments would shape me — but they planted the seed for what would one day become my life’s passion.

In my early twenties, I started baking for family, friends, and co-workers, and that’s when everything clicked. I was mostly self-taught in those days, learning through trial and error, late nights, and lots of flour everywhere! Eventually, I had the opportunity to apprentice under some amazing pastry chefs in the Houston area, which really helped refine my skills and deepen my appreciation for the craft.

In 2016, I made the decision to go to culinary school, and I graduated in 2018. Two years later, in the middle of all the uncertainty the world was facing, I decided to take a leap of faith and launch Simple Sweet Cakes, LLC — my own cottage bakery.

Today, I specialize in creating bespoke cakes and confections that help people celebrate life’s sweetest moments. Whether I’m crafting a custom wedding cake or teaching others the joy of baking, I believe that great baking is about more than just the recipe — it’s about love, creativity, and connection.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Not at all — but I think that’s what makes this journey so meaningful.

Starting a business, especially a creative one, comes with its fair share of challenges. There were moments of self-doubt, financial uncertainty, and plenty of trial and error. In the early days, I baked from home, sometimes pulling all-nighters to perfect an order or make sure everything was just right for a client’s special occasion. There were setbacks — cakes that didn’t rise, recipes that didn’t work, and times when I questioned whether I was really cut out for entrepreneurship.

But every obstacle taught me something valuable. I learned resilience, patience, and the importance of trusting the process — both in baking and in life. Each challenge pushed me to grow not just as a baker, but as a woman learning to build something beautiful from scratch, one layer at a time.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I specialize in creating custom cakes and confections that feel deeply personal. My goal has always been to make every dessert as unique as the person it’s made for — whether that’s a classic buttercream wedding cake, a whimsical birthday creation, or elegant cupcakes for a baby shower.

What sets my work apart is the heart I pour into each order. I don’t just want my desserts to look beautiful — I want them to taste like comfort, celebration, and love. Every design starts with a conversation, and every detail matters. I think my clients can feel that personal touch — that their story and their joy are baked right into the experience.

Is there a quality that you most attribute to your success?
I love the way baking connects people. There’s something so special about knowing that a cake I created will be part of someone’s milestone — a wedding, a graduation, a new beginning. Those are sacred moments, and it’s an honor to be invited into them.

I also love the creativity. Baking allows me to blend artistry and emotion — to turn flour, sugar, and butter into something that makes people smile. For me, it’s not just a job; it’s a way of expressing gratitude and joy.

If there’s one thing this journey has taught me, it’s that purpose often reveals itself in the most unexpected ways. What started as a simple love for baking in my family’s kitchen has become a path of healing, creativity, and connection. I’m grateful for every person who has trusted me to be a part of their special moments — it’s a reminder that something as simple as a slice of cake can carry so much love. My hope is that through my work, people feel not only sweetness, but sincerity — that they’re reminded to celebrate life’s little joys and to never stop believing in the beauty of their own dreams.
