Today we’d like to introduce you to Brittney Grayson.
Hi Brittney, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
Even as a child, I had an entrepreneurial spirit. My sisters and I used to drag our trampoline to the front yard and charge the neighborhood kids a quarter for 20 jumps — that was my first taste of business! I come from a family of dreamers and doers. My dad had huge ideas and a big imagination. He would take us to “For Lease” buildings around Houston and describe the businesses he envisioned there. He’d even drive us through prominent neighborhoods, letting us walk through beautiful homes while encouraging us to pick our rooms and imagine how we’d decorate them. He taught me how to dream big.
My mom, on the other hand, showed me hustle and perseverance. She raised five daughters, most of the time on her own, and always made sure we had what we needed — and often what we wanted. She worked hard and ran several of her own ventures, from a youth organization to a home daycare. I like to say I got the best of both worlds: my dad’s vision and my mom’s drive.
I started working as soon as I legally could, but I quickly realized the corporate world wasn’t for me. Growing up, I saw how much my mom had to work, and I promised myself that when I became a mother, I’d find a way to provide for my family while still being present for my children.
In my 20s, I tried starting several businesses — some creative, some practical — but none quite took off the way I hoped. Then one day in 2015, while being trained for CPR for my home childcare business, I asked the instructor how she got started. She didn’t gatekeep; she shared exactly what to do. That same day, I began my journey toward becoming a certified CPR instructor through the American Heart Association.
Like many ventures, it didn’t take off overnight. I taught classes here and there, sometimes partnering with another instructor. I loved the work, but it wasn’t steady income. Still, every time I considered giving up, a class would come through just when I needed it most. Eventually, I went back to a 9-to-5 job, thinking maybe CPR training wasn’t meant to be my full-time path.
Then the pandemic hit, and I shifted into web design, branding, and virtual assistance — skills I’d built over time. But after the world reopened, something unexpected happened: my former CPR clients started calling, asking to renew their certifications. At first, I said no — after all, I had “moved on.” But the requests kept coming, and I began to feel that maybe God was nudging me to return. After some prayer and reflection, I decided to listen.
In 2022, I recertified as a CPR instructor, and this time, everything changed. The woman who trained me connected me to new opportunities and fellow instructors, and my network began to grow. Soon I was teaching regularly — traveling to companies across Houston to ensure their teams were prepared for life-threatening emergencies.
As I worked, I began to see a deeper need — a life-saving gap in underserved communities. Research and experience both showed that cardiac arrest victims in certain neighborhoods are less likely to receive CPR before help arrives. That realization shifted my mission. I wanted my work to go beyond compliance — to focus on empowerment and equity.
Today, through my business Purpose Safety Plus, we provide CPR and safety training for both businesses and communities. We not only help organizations meet compliance requirements but also bring free and low-cost classes to neighborhoods where CPR training is needed most. My goal is to ensure that every person — no matter their zip code — has the knowledge and confidence to save a life.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Definitely not — but every challenge has shaped me into the businesswoman I am today. My journey has been full of lessons, faith, and growth.
When I first became a CPR instructor, I loved the work, but it wasn’t easy to build momentum. I didn’t know how to market myself, and getting my name out there felt overwhelming. There were times when I questioned whether I was even on the right path. I was a wife and mom trying to balance family life, work, and my dreams — and that in itself was a challenge. I would go to my 9-to-5 job during the day, and during my lunch breaks or late at night after my kids went to bed, I’d be working on my business — researching, creating flyers, or reaching out to potential clients.
Finances were another hurdle. Starting out meant investing in equipment and supplies before I was consistently bringing in income. There were moments when I had to stretch what little I had just to keep moving forward.
But through all of that, I never lost sight of why I started — to create something that allowed me to be present and help provide for my family while making an impact in the community. Each obstacle forced me to get creative, to pray harder, and to keep showing up even when things didn’t look promising.
Now, when I look back, I realize those hard seasons built my resilience and gave me the confidence to lead Purpose Safety Plus with purpose and passion. The road hasn’t been smooth, but it’s been worth every bump along the way.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
My business, Purpose Safety Plus, is more than just a CPR and safety training company — it’s a mission. We specialize in CPR, First Aid, and emergency preparedness training for businesses, childcare providers, schools, and everyday families. What truly sets us apart is our focus on closing the safety gap in underserved communities — because I believe that every heartbeat deserves a fighting chance, no matter your zip code.
We train corporate teams and organizations that need to meet compliance requirements, but my heart is especially tied to bringing this same life-saving education to the communities that are least likely to receive it. We host free and low-cost community classes throughout the year, making CPR training accessible to families, parents, and youth. I love seeing people walk in nervous and unsure, and walk out feeling confident that they could save a life — that moment never gets old.
Purpose Safety Plus was built with faith, determination, and a whole lot of multitasking. I started this business while juggling motherhood, a 9-to-5 job, and sometimes teaching classes out of whatever space I could find. There were plenty of late nights fueled by coffee, prayer, and pure purpose. But I’m proud to say we’ve grown into a trusted name in CPR and safety training across the Houston area — and we’re just getting started.
What sets us apart isn’t just what we teach, but how we teach it. My approach is relatable, engaging, and community-centered. I’ve found that when people feel comfortable and inspired, they learn better — so don’t be surprised if you laugh a little during one of our classes while learning serious, life-saving skills.
Brand-wise, I’m most proud that Purpose Safety Plus stands for empowerment, representation, and purpose. We’re breaking the stereotype of what a CPR instructor or safety company “should” look like, and showing that women — especially women from underserved communities — can lead in the safety and emergency response industry.
At Purpose Safety Plus, we don’t just teach CPR — we teach confidence, courage, and community care. My goal is for every person we train to walk away knowing that they have the power to make a difference in someone’s life.

What sort of changes are you expecting over the next 5-10 years?
The CPR and safety training industry is evolving fast. Over the next decade, I see a major shift toward comprehensive workplace safety, not just CPR compliance. Companies are beginning to realize that safety culture, preparedness, and equity all go hand-in-hand. The industry as a whole is projected to grow significantly as organizations invest more in employee safety programs and innovative training methods like blended learning and mobile options.
At Purpose Safety Plus, we’re excited to grow right alongside that change. While we’ll always stay true to our mission of empowering underserved communities through CPR and emergency readiness, we’re also expanding into more corporate safety initiatives — helping businesses strengthen their overall safety culture and readiness.
I believe the future of this industry is about connection and confidence — connecting safety to real people and real lives, and giving everyone, from boardrooms to neighborhoods, the confidence to respond when it matters most.
