Today we’d like to introduce you to Sheri Horrocks.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I became a mother really young at the age of 17. I knew I wanted to have a ton of photos of my children and my family. So I bought my first camera and started taking photos almost every day of my child and continued to do so for all three of my children. These are some of my most precious memories.Since I loved taking photos so much I decided why not start my own business. So for the last eight years I’ve been taking photos of other families. Giving families memories that will last a lifetime brings me so much joy. Taking photos of families with young children or seniors are my absolute favorite.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Starting a new business is always hard. But I started with my close friends and family and offering free sessions to get my name out there. Doing so has allowed me to have several families that I have taken every year for the past eight years. And now they’re paying clients. Starting a new business is always hard but if you push through the hard moments because it’s something you really want to do, anything as possible.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
My photography business is my second job. I am a full-time coding coordinator for Memorial Hermann Hospital So I schedule my photo sessions on the weekends or evenings. Figuring out what style of editing I wanted to do was one of the hardest parts. But once I figured that out and I got a consistent style that represented Sheri Lynn Photography, I booked more sessions, I’ve been able to grow my business because of my style and my personality! I also feel families love booking with me because of the joy it brings me and it shows through my sessions. I love when there’s little children, making them laugh and seeing the memories that are being created! At one of my sessions I took my husband and my youngest son with me and they fished at the nearby lake while I did my session, They laughed at me because after the session was over, they told me they could hear me trying to get the baby to laugh and smile all the way across the park..
Risk taking is a topic that people have widely differing views on – we’d love to hear your thoughts.
When I first started a business, I thought I would never do weddings. They just seemed overwhelming and I felt I wasn’t good enough. But then I was asked to do my first wedding a few years after I started my company and it was a small backyard wedding. It was a really great time and the couple loved their photos. Since then, I continue to do a couple weddings a year. They are a lot of hard work, but in the end, they are very rewarding. I’ve always priced my sessions to be affordable to families. When I started this company, I had the mindset that I was gonna be priced in a way that could be a blessing to others. I have raised my prices over the years due to the time of sessions, the editing and the skill set that I’ve developed. But I continue to stay in a price range that allows any family to be able to afford one of the sessions that I offer. God‘s really blessed me in my life and I want to continue to be a photography company that blesses other people and is affordable.
