Community Highlights: Meet Tierra Barber of B. Elevated Candle Bar

Today we’d like to introduce you to Tierra Barber.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
My journey started in education and athletics, where long hours and heavy responsibilities didn’t quite match the pay or time I needed for my family. I always dreamed of working for myself, even though it seemed far-fetched since no one in my family was a business owner. But I knew I’d get there one day.The turning point came when my youngest began reacting to the candles I burned at home. I started making my own candles free of phthalates, parabens & vanillin (which all cause negative endocrine and respiratory responses) and what began as a small project quickly grew into a business. I sold my candles at local markets in Missouri City and Houston, and soon, I had the idea to let others create their own. With Houston’s vibrant food scene, I wanted to offer a luxury DIY experience without breaking the bank. I took a leap and opened my first brick-and-mortar location to host classes. We quickly outgrew that space and moved to River Oaks, where we continue to thrive. It’s been an incredible experience, blending my passion for creativity with a life that gives me more time with my family. I’m so excited for what’s ahead, especially the launch of B. Elevated On-the-Go, our mobile bar, where we bring the experience of candle making to any event for incredible party favors. We’re also tapping into perfumes which excited me as well. Im completely faith driven and understand that without being guided by my Savior, Jesus Christ, none of this would be possible.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
There have been many struggles along the way, work life balance was a major one. One of the most valuable lessons I learned early on as a working mom was an analogy that really stuck with me about glass and rubber balls. As moms, we juggle so many responsibilities, and we often have multiple “balls” in the air. The rubber balls can bounce—if they fall, you can catch them later. But the glass balls? They shatter if they hit the ground. I quickly realized that my children are the glass balls. Everything else, work, deadlines, other commitments—can fall and I’ll catch it later. I have this mindset with my family but also with my business. I have labeled the glass and rubber balls in business and know now which ones can drop and be picked up later and which ones I cant afford to drop at all. So there have been plenty of trials and errors in hiring, with SOP issues, inventory problems, customer care etc but if I can keep the perspective of the rubber balls and knowing that from each dropped ball a lesson can be learned then Ill keep gaining wisdom with every struggle and set back to apply to the future– in my personal life and with future business endeavors.

Any advice for finding a mentor or networking in general?
When it comes to networking or finding a mentor. I’ve learned that it’s truly a mutual exchange. Effective networking isn’t just about what you can gain. It’s about what you can *offer*. Everyone has unique strengths, perspectives, and skills, and when we approach relationships with that in mind, it becomes easier to build meaningful, lasting connections.

I’ve also learned the importance of being direct and clear about what you’re seeking. Entrepreneurs and leaders are often balancing long days and demanding responsibilities, so clarity is appreciated. Don’t be afraid to speak up, make your ask, and articulate exactly what you need. Most people are willing to help, they just need to know how.

When finding a mentor I like to focus on the whole being. Can I glean from this person in business but also in life. How is their marriage and relationship with their children? Is he or she of the same faith as me? These things matter when seeking wisdom.

So in short: bring value, be intentional, and be bold in your requests. It opens doors much faster than hesitation ever will.

Also as a follower of Christ I make sure to pray before involving my business with anyone else. Not everyone is meant to be “followed”.
