Exploring Life & Business with TJ “LaTiegre” Diaz of The Texas Home Queen Group

Today we’d like to introduce you to TJ “LaTiegre” Diaz.

Hi TJ, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I started off as a “super community member.” I’m a mom to 3 kids and just wanted to create the community that I wanted them to have. So I became extremely involved with my community. So involved that I started developing a following locally and people started to recognize me wherever I went. There was a local Realtor who was extremely well known and she recognized my talents and suggested I get my real estate license. At the time my husband was the only one working and I wanted to find a way to support my family while doing something I was passionate about. So I convinced my husband to move back to Houston so I can get my real estate license and he agreed. The rest is history!

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
There were many challenges along the way. Starting over in a city I hadn’t lived in since I was a child. The ups and downs of the market. My husband joining my business as my business partner and us learning how to work together. I’m sure you can imagine how rough that was in the beginning. haha. Overall there were many hurdles. But I never gave up and I leaned into what made me uniquely myself and that’s where I found my success. So many people are afraid to put themselves out there and as a result they kind of fade into the background. I’ve always stood at the forefront by being my real and authentic self. That and putting myself out there on social media helped people feel like they know me and ultimately that’s what has given me an amazing career.

With that said, I’m starting a new chapter of my life now as I’m only several months past the shock and heartbreak of losing my beloved husband who passed away back in August of this year. So I am having to learn how to be a Realtor again without him as my business partner and without having him as my right hand in life overall. It’s been a challenge, but I’m doing it.

We’d love to hear about how you think about risk taking?
I believe it’s important to take calculated risks, the most important being the risk to bet on yourself. I owe everything I have now to my risk selling my home and moving to Houston to start my real estate career. I had already taken two classes online that I could not finish. It was too hard for me to finish the courses while juggling my kids and schedule. I needed to be in Houston near family where I would have help to finish my coursework. I had spent over a year attempting to finish the online real estate classes to get my license where it only took 5 weeks to finish my courses in person here in Houston. I’ve been able to change my family’s entire financial future by taking the risk.

And now I just recently took another risk…one of the biggest risks of my career. And it’s bitter sweet. The day before my husband passed away we looked at a commercial property to make into our office. We submitted an offer and we got it. After he passed I had to make a decision about whether I was going to proceed with the office or if I was going to let go of our dream. After careful consideration I decided to go ahead and proceed with the purchase. It is the scariest thing I’ve ever had to do in my life, but I’m doing it. I want to build a legacy that will live beyond me. Owning commercial real estate is part of that process. And I want people to know that TJ Diaz and the Texas Home Queen Group is here to stay. We are here to make a difference in so many lives and our local community. And we are grateful for the opportunity.
