Today we’d like to introduce you to Eric Sundin.
Hi Eric, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
When I was young, I was amazed at comic book artists and practiced copying many images and aspired to be one of those artists. Reality set in and found schools thought math, english and history was more important than art. I was fortunate to have a very cool art teacher in high school who helped me foster the desire in my heart. Fast forward 5 years, I was bartending and had a girlfriend that didn’t appreciate me dragging, about the time she was going to her job. I was painting and airbrushing art in my spare time. She said “get a new job or pack up”. Luckily I knew how to use the airbrush and a map company needed that skill. So, the beginning of my life as a paid artist would begin. I worked there for a year, took some college drafting and art classes and applied at Exxon as a draftsman and was hired. There I would be surrounded by very talented artists and learned so much. Automation and Computer Aided Drafting would change everything after 10 years of working by hand, making maps and graphics images for the Exploration company. I saw an opportunity and switched over to the IT side of the company and enjoyed the additional pay associated with it, but longed to be back in the creative world of art. So, I did the corporate life until 2020 and Covid, which put everyone home. I joined a small gallery (Da Vinci Artists Gallery in Tomball Tx.) and eventually became Curator and Director. This to me was my “happy place” and reminded me of the old days at Exxon, with 15 other artists and lots of exposure to new ways of creating art. I am now a full-time artist in Houston.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
I think the biggest struggles have been skeptics and people that like to say “that”ll never sell”. Sometimes it’s true and sometimes it isn’t. Those skeptics and there voices get in your own head and you start questioning what you’re painting. Subject matter of paintings is always a struggle.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I have always been an Acrylic artist and known for the boldness of my paintings. I do not like seeing a faint brush stroke that allows the viewer to see the canvas stitch pattern.
Can you tell us more about what you were like growing up?
I’ve always been a very sociable person and feel like, if I’m not smiling and having fun, I’m static and being static is boring. I want to be that person that people are happy to see when I walk through the door.
Art allows me to believe, I’ll live on beyond me years and my legacy will live on much longer than my life.
