Today we’d like to introduce you to Kayla Sainz.
Hi Kayla, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
Well, for starters.. hair was never part of my original plan. When I started college, my heart was set on becoming a counselor or possibly a social worker for children navigating the trauma of watching a loved one go through chemotherapy.. something I had lived through myself. I lost my mom to cancer at 17, just before my senior year of high school, and that loss shaped so much of who I wanted to become.
But after barely surviving my first year of college while juggling two part-time jobs, I knew something had to change. My new goal was simple: earn my cosmetology license, transfer to a university to finish my degree, and do hair on the side so I wasn’t stuck making minimum wage. I was already doing “kitchen hair” to make ends meet.
What I didn’t know was that just a few months into hair school, I would fall completely in love with this industry.
After becoming a licensed cosmetologist in 2011, I spent the first seven years of my career as a commission stylist in a salon where I also managed the team for five of those years. This is where my passion for leadership and education really took flight.
I got married in 2015 and welcomed my first baby in 2017. Very quickly, I realized that managing a salon while working long hours wasn’t the balance I wanted during those early months of motherhood. That’s when I began considering a solo suite so I could continue doing what I loved while being more present at home. After touring a facility, something in me said, “It’s time.” And I took the leap.
From the very beginning, I knew I wanted a brand I could be proud of.. something meaningful, something with room to grow. Maven Made Hair Co. was officially established in March of 2018. Maven means “expert,” and I immediately fell in love with the name and the double-M logo I designed.
Maven Made Hair Co. is my personal success story.. one built on resilience, faith, and growth through every challenge. I started with a modest two-chair, 210 sq. ft. salon suite. Even though I began solo, I always knew I was building something bigger. Just six months in, I hired my first assistant, and it reignited my spark for leadership and education. I felt like I was exactly where I was meant to be.
A year later, an opportunity to expand came my way.. the chance to build out my first full salon. After a lot of thought and prayer, I committed to the expansion in early 2020. What I didn’t expect was a global pandemic right behind it. Despite the uncertainty, we pushed forward, continued prepping, renovating, and believing in the vision.
In September 2020, I relocated and expanded Maven Made Hair Co. into a beautifully renovated, 2,700 sq. ft. century-old building in the heart of Downtown Rosenberg. What started as a five-chair salon has now grown into an eleven-chair space filled with incredibly talented, thriving stylists.. a team I’m proud to lead every single day.
Maven Made Hair Co. began as a necessity, grew into a calling, and has become a home for myself, for my team, and for the community we serve. Because of our commitment and dedication, MMHC proudly owned the title of Best Salon in Fort Bend County, cementing our reputation as a leading salon in the community.
MMHC has more plans for expansion in 2026 and we are beyond blessed to be supported in so many ways.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It has been far from smooth. Building a business from the ground up comes with so many challenges. Mindset is everything. As soon as I adopted a flexible mindset, I began to accept the things I could not change. I began to understand the importance of being able to adapt as each challenge presented itself, and I began to learn that the best lessons came from the things that didn’t work out. For every disappointment, came an even greater opportunity soon after.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
MMHC is a luxury hair salon tailored to women. We specialize in blonding services, signature haircuts, and dimensional brunettes. We also specialize in hair extensions, offering our own high-quality brand of hair. Our team is committed to delivering personalized experiences that are unique to each and every client.
I am most proud of the team culture we’ve created at MMHC. Our clients know that their experience is our priority, and the atmosphere within our salon is a huge part of that. The team at Maven Made has been built on respect, trust, and genuine friendship. We take care of one another, and we take care of our clients.. not as individuals, but as a whole. That unity is what makes MMHC feel different the moment you walk through the door.
We’d love to hear about any fond memories you have from when you were growing up?
My favorite childhood memories are definitely the big family holiday gatherings. My Dad was one of seven siblings, and with our deep Italian roots, those celebrations were loud, loving, and full of tradition. It was the kind of environment where family meant everything. Those moments shaped so much of who I am today.
