Today we’d like to introduce you to Surface Grey.
Surface, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I’m really still working. No where near where I want to be honestly but I’m an artist/producer/songwriter from Houston, TX (northside to be specific). I started off singing in church choir when I was really young but then I grew more of an affinity for Freestyling and I was the self proclaimed, “Freestyle King,” for YEARS. Then one day it hit me when I was like 10, “man I need to start writing some of this stuff down to remember.” Safe to say I’ve been writing ever since.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It has not been a smooth road at all. My aunt (former musician and Broadway actress) once told me don’t do this music stuff. At first, I thought she was hating cause her career didn’t quite pan out as we thought it would, but I really realized she read meaning the toll it’s going to take on your physical and mental health. I’ll admit none of this is easy especially now we have to compete against millions of other artists but now robots too with A.I plus the amount of fake friends who’ve used or tried to use me. Make sure you keep business business because it can get ugly very quick. Above them all, losing the influence and inspiration for me starting music, my pops, has been the toughest of them all. Some days I’ll be mid mixing or working on some music and just completely stop because I really feel I don’t hear the music the same as I did when he was on this earth. Despite, I still push through and try to figure it all out because I know he wouldn’t of wanted me to stop.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I’m known for my music. Production plus my own art as an artist. However, I originally started off ghostwriting at a label that is now defunct before I found my own sound as an artist and started putting out music.
What’s next?
A lot of things I always said I needed a Grammy by age 27 and I just turned 27 last week to be exact on the 22nd of November. I’m praying my dream comes true.
