Today we’d like to introduce you to Joshua Scott.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I think I like a lot of people got into it as a covid habit. That’s not totally true. I doodled a lot in class just to help keep my mind busy while the teacher spoke. I got decent at it. Sort of comic book stuff, graffiti art that kind of thing but never took it too serious. Once covid hit and I had a lot of time at home I just wanted to get back into it and it started off terrible. Very quickly though. Maybe my my 4th or 5th painting in? I could tell that I was getting the foundation of something better so I stuck with it. I really dig the creativity aspect of it. Just coming up with an original idea and transcribing it onto a canvas is beautiful to me. Anyways, I started off in Vegas and I was getting sort of my feet up under me. I’d been invited to a couple of shows but I never went. I moved to Houston in 2023 and it really took off pretty quick from there. I was here for maybe 6 months to a year and I’ve been to a whole bunch of shows I’ve been to. I’ve been in a couple of exhibits and the progress in my skills developed extremely quickly. Lots of creative people in this city that you can draw inspiration off of.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Honestly, it has been pretty smooth. I never had the expectations that I would be where I’m at now and so watching my paintings go from what they were to what they are. I really feel like I couldn’t ask for a quicker progression.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I mostly specialize in acrylic paintings. I tend to do more portraits than anything else. You just see a lot of people and so you have a lot of time just in your day-to-day life to study faces and contours and just facial expressions and that kind of thing. Recently I’ve gotten into mixed media foam clay and sculpting. Just trying to spread my wings a little bit. I like to think about the art pieces that I’m going to do for a long time before they’re realized on even a sketch. One of my recent pieces is a mask and the bondu knots are made out of rope and it’s a sort of African traditional and I sat on that idea trying to figure out what I was going to do for maybe 3 months and then one day it clicked and I was off to the races. Once I got
a handle on the foam clay that I was using in my masks that triggered a new idea for embossed paintings to give a little texture to it and that’s just sort of how the ideas happen. You have one and it rolls into the next and it rolls into the next or you learn something new and now you want to advance that skill set.
If you had to, what characteristic of yours would you give the most credit to?
I know it’s easier said than done but not being afraid to fail. I think a lot of people are held back myself included. I really try my best to not be worried it’s not going to turn out good. It’s hard because you’re worried it’s going to waste your time. Your worried about disapproval. You’re worried you could be doing something people would appreciate more. The other thing I would say is that I’m actively trying to get better with each piece that I do. I don’t just have a idea and I want to express that I also wanted that idea to challenge me and to help my skills grow at the same time. Several times in paintings I’ve I’ve figured out a new technique or figured out something that I’ve been doing wrong in the middle of the painting and I’ll go back and rework the entire painting with the new skill set and that’s a very beneficial practice to me.
Pricing:
- I’m still building my pricing model. It mostly comes down to cost of supplies. Time it took me to complete the piece. And how much personal pride I taken to the piece.
- Smaller pieces tend to go for 80 to 150
- Some of my larger pieces are in the 500 to 2000 range
