Today we’d like to introduce you to David Chaumette.
David began his career working at NASA and GE Aircraft Engines after having earned degrees in Aerospace Engineering from Princeton and Stanford. He then went to the University of Chicago Law School and had a legal career for almost 20 years. During that time, he spent more than two decades helping businesses across numerous industries overcome their challenges and was recognized as a thought leader on the management of electronic data, specifically including issues related to social media.
Among the media references to David are articles appearing in numerous media outlets, ranging from The Houston Chronicle and KUHF-FM to ESPN.com and TMZ. David has always been active in the community as well. He has led the board of several Houston-based organizations, including the Houston Young Lawyers Association, the Houston Bar Association, the Houston Lawyers Foundation, Leadership Houston, and Neighborhood Centers, Inc. (now known as Baker Ripley).
To each of these boards, David brought compassion and much of the same business acumen he developed working with his private clients. He left the legal profession in 2013 to establish his private consultancy firm, which continues his work helping small businesses and their owners grow and prosper. His clients are from across the United States and are in business all over the world. Many of his clients use David when it appears that no one else has the skills to help.
Since leaving the legal profession, David has continued his education, receiving his Mediator certification in 2013 and his Project Management Professional certification in 2016. He is also scheduled to complete his Executive MBA in May 2018.
Has it been a smooth road?
It has not been a smooth road at all. Unfortunately, success made David a target for people.
While representing a business whose owners were involved in an ongoing dispute, David became the subject of a criminal contempt case. That case, resolved over two years in David’s favor, occurred at the same time as a painful divorce and several other professional challenges. As a result, David spent years in self-discovery and learning who his true friends were. Throughout this time, David worked to protect his children and fulfill his obligations to the organizations he was serving, but the long-term effect on David has been profound.
Simply, David has always been the champion of the underdog and the falsely accused, and these experiences reinforced those core beliefs. He carries those approaches into the work of his business today.
So, as you know, we’re impressed with Chaumette Solutions – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
Chaumette Solutions is often the Consultant of Last Resort, the consultant that companies turn to when no other solutions have worked. Over the years, I learned that challenges in business rarely have solutions in just one discipline. Legal problems often have accounting implications. Human resources issues are often part of larger management issues. And cash flow is related to everything.
Too often, companies do not have a high-level responses to issues. Instead, the response is siloed which limits the effectiveness of any actions taken. Chaumette Solutions takes a multi-disciplinary approach to problems. Trained in legal issues, project management, and business fundamentals, Chaumette Solutions takes considered approaches to problems, because most of those problems require work across many disciplines.
We are known for taking a lot of data and distilling the core issues so that the clients can move forward successfully. We also are compassionate, dedicated, and most importantly, ready to meet the client where their issues have taken them. Few other consultants have the depth of compassion, the number of disciplines, and the wealth of real-world experience to bring to bear on their clients’ problems.
Most of all, we are proud of our lasting impact on our communities. Organizations and companies we have touched have changed for the better (and changed for good). Much of that impact has been in the area of leadership transformation and growth, but Chaumette Solutions has had an effect in other areas as well.
Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
I have lived in Sugar Land since 1981 (except for the years I was away for school). This is an amazing place.
The Houston area is one where you can make an impact even if you are from somewhere else. I have seen this personally. My parents were immigrants and when we came to Houston, we knew no one. Through hard work and persistence, I was blessed to have made an impact in several areas around the city.
Houston is a city full of optimism and old-fashioned hard work. And we have been able to work together across cultures in ways that other cities have not. One needs to look no further than the community response to Hurricane Harvey to see into the heart of Houston. We are not perfect, but we have been able to overcome a lot.
On the negative side, Houston does not get the credit it deserves nationally. In his book The Metropolitan Revolution, Bruce Katz of Brookings heralded the Houston area as an emerging example of metropolitan innovation and smart governance, but people still seem focused on Dallas, L.A. and Chicago. In the end, that’s ok. It’s better if Houston is kept our little secret.
