Today we’d like to introduce you to Kiya Green.
Hi Kiya, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I started acting when I was in the sixth grade. Back then, I wasn’t really into acting, I just took it as an elective. But my theatre teacher was determined to get all of us engaged. So, one day, he asked the class, “What do you want to be when you grow up?” Everyone started saying things like “doctor,” “nurse,” or “lawyer”, all the typical answers.
Then he said “Well, if you’re an actor, you can be all of those things.”
That absolutely blew my mind! The idea that you could play pretend and become anything you, instantly intrigued me and completely changed my perspective on acting. Ever since that day, I’ve loved acting.
I did a little bit of theatre in high school, but at the time, I thought that was as far as I’d go with it. Eventually, I decided to major in theatre because, it was the only thing I wanted to do. I went on to study at Stephen F. Austin State University, where I learned so much about myself, both as a person and as an artist.
During my senior year of college, I landed an internship at The Ensemble Theatre in Houston, TX. They loved my me so much that they offered me the BOLD Artistic Fellow position at the theatre. I’ve been in Houston ever since. Living my dream and doing what I love every single day!
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
So far, so good! I’ve only been a professional actor for a year now, and things have been going great. Thank you, universe!
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I’m an actor here in Houston. During the day, I work at The Ensemble Theatre as their BOLD Artistic Fellow, and at night, I’m either rehearsing, performing, or auditioning so I can rehearse and perform even more!
What I’m most proud of is that I’ve truly followed through with my dreams. Many people give up on acting because it’s such a tough industry, but this is the one thing I know I’m meant to do, I’ve just got to keep going!
What sets me apart from others is that I simply want to be an artist. That means you can put me in anything. It doesn’t matter if I’m playing Elphaba on Broadway or Tree #3 in a school production. I just want to create art in any way I can.
Do you have any advice for those just starting out?
The biggest advice I would give is to not be afraid. For a long time, I let fear hold me back. I’ve missed out on so many opportunities because I was worried about what people might think of me or whether I was good enough. But, none of that matters. The only opinion that counts is yours. Do not let fear dictate your life!
