Today we’d like to introduce you to Tyler Tumbleson.
Hi Tyler, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I was born and raised in Houston, but really feel like I grew up in Sugar Land. My mom taught and my siblings and I went to a private school here in Sugar Land, so it’s an area that I’ve been connected with my whole life.
I also grew up playing baseball, and it quickly became one of my first passions. I played through high school before ultimately deciding to go to Texas A&M University. Once I discovered sport management as a major and staying close to baseball/sports as a career path, I knew that’s what I wanted to pursue. As a student, I went through a summer internship with the Sugar Land Skeeters (our organization’s old name) and, despite the long hours and lack of pay, had one of the best summers of my life. After working at a couple of other organizations upon graduation, I saw the Account Executive spot open here in 2021 and took a chance on a career (ticket sales) that I’d never done before just to return to the organization. It’s been one of the best decisions I’ve ever made!
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I don’t believe everyone’s story is perfectly even or smooth, mine included. We bounced around rental houses or staying with family growing up and I didn’t get to experience a ton of the same things or experiences of some of my friends. However, I still consider myself blessed and fortunate. We always had a roof over our head, I was able to enjoy baseball, and (through a lot of student loan help!) I was able to go to a great university and graduate.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I’m currently Senior Account Executive, Ticket Sales and Services with the Sugar Land Space Cowboys, the Triple-A minor league affiliate of the Houston Astros. I connect with local companies, social groups, families, etc. to find ways for them to come enjoy Space Cowboys baseball, whether that be through ticket packages or single group outings.
I’m most proud of my ability to grow and adapt into my current role. I’m not a very outspoken person and definitely not your traditional “salesperson”. While I had worked in other sales-related jobs in the past, this was my first crack at ticket sales, and while there were growing pains, I have been able to hit my stride and grow into a leader here internally. It’s also my first true leadership opportunity in the corporate world, and I’m proud of the hustle I went through to get here.
I think what sets me apart from others is just my ability to connect with all sorts of people I interact with day in and day out. As I said above, I’m not the most extroverted person out there, but I do consider myself a great listener and am able to ask the right questions and engage with people in a way that’s allowed me to build extremely valuable connections, both with our staff and our fans. It’s definitely my favorite thing about the job, too!
What was your favorite childhood memory?
My favorite childhood memory is being able to go to Cooperstown, New York to play in a baseball tournament when I was 12. We really didn’t go on many vacations, and even though this one was centered around baseball, I was able to explore the Hall of Fame and New York City.
