Today we’d like to introduce you to Darnell Jones.
Darnell, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
My barber journey started in 2016. I wasn’t happy at the job I was working at the the time, and decided to step out on faith and trust God. I quit my job and enrolled in barber college. I graduated from K&G 5 Star Barber College in 2016, and from there I started working at House of Fadez Barbershop. But, I had bigger dreams. I always knew I wanted my own shop so when the opportunity came, I took it. I wasn’t ready, but I trusted God. It was go hard, or go home. I opened Faded Universe Barbershop in the middle of the covid-19 pandemic. I started small in a private studio. Within a year that studio became a 1200 sqft Barbershop. And thanks to my team and our clients, we’ve been in business 6 years now.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Things have definitely been hard. It has not always been a smooth road. When business is good, it’s good and when business is slow, it slow. Those slow periods are what make it all worth it. As a first time business owner, you’re going to make mistakes. You have to learn from those mistakes in order to grow. You can’t keep making the same mistakes. Bringing in the right people is also a challenge. Everyone says the right things when they want to work with you, so sometimes it’s challenging because you never know the real motives of the people coming in. Its hard to find good professional Barbers that are motivated and of good character. Some just see the success from the outside but dont know how you got there, then realize how hard it can get and want to jump ship. Im just thankful that I have a solid team with me and they trust me with their livelihood. Every decision I make, directly affects them so I want to make sure im handling things the right way. Even though things get hard, I can’t complain about the challenges because this is who I chose to be and what I chose to do.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
My name is Darnell Jones. I am the owner of Faded Universe Barbershop. I am a professional Barber. I specialize in making a difference in the way people feel about themselves, from behind the chair. One Fade at time. Im most proud of being a person of service. I love giving back to my community. Whether it’s coaching little league sports, charity, and just being a person of the people. Thats what I feel sets me apart from others. Being good at Fading hair is just a plus.
We all have a different way of looking at and defining success. How do you define success?
Success to me is not monetary. Its in how many lives I can affect positively. Bob Marley said this in an interview I watched some years ago and I will never forget how that made me look at life.
