We recently had the chance to connect with Omar Virjee CPA and have shared our conversation below.
Omar, it’s always a pleasure to learn from you and your journey. Let’s start with a bit of a warmup: What is something outside of work that is bringing you joy lately?
My family brings me joy outside of work. Having three little ones and watching them grow and interact with each other is a joy that is indescribable. I have 3 boys; a 6 year old and two three year old’s that are twins. They call me Babba. As I grow and get older I continue to realize how this time is precious and can never be replaced. I’ve taken steps to adjust my schedule to be able to spend more quality time with them.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
I’m Omar. I am the CEO and Founder of Virjee Consulting, a CPA firm headquartered in Houston Texas. Over the past 12 years our business has grown from the our home, to having our own office building with 25 team members serving over 600 clients across the nation. What makes us unique is that we are a one stop shop for our clients because we provide accounting, payroll, tax planning, tax preparation and business consulting under one roof, for a fixed fee. Because we are vertically integrated and relationship focused we are able to become a part of our client’s teams and have the information to help them make the best decisions for their business. One of the key decisions is how they can use advanced strategies to reduce their tax burden.
Additionally we are niche focused. So we specialize in working with Dental, Medical and Vet Practices. We have strong relationships with bankers to help them finance their practice, to attorneys and brokers to help with lease and location selection. We are able to bring all of these individuals together to make it easy on the doctor when starting their practice.
Amazing, so let’s take a moment to go back in time. What was your earliest memory of feeling powerful?
I have always believed, power is freedom. From my earliest memories I have always remembered that I always sought freedom. From parents, teachers, and bosses. I much later realized that this deep desire to seek freedom is what is common among serial entrepreneurs.
My earliest feeling of freedom, which made me feel powerful was when I launched my first business when I was 16 and came home one day with a wad of cash, and laid it out on my desk in my room. The first thought that came in my mind was that I had choices. I could reinvest and buy more products to sell, I could go crazy and spend it all on some gadget, or a pair of basketball shoes I wanted. I could go out with my friends and have a day out on the town. It taught me that if I wanted or needed something, I had the means and the ability to go out and create something that would provide me the means to attain that “something” That I didn’t need to depend on someone else to “give” it to me, whether it be parents or an employer. That understanding was a powerful learning opportunity that sat with me for the rest of my life and became a part of my personality and mindset.
What did suffering teach you that success never could?
Suffering taught me perseverance. It taught me patience and built a muscle and a mindset that I consider one of my greatest assets.
Suffering is like lifting weights. If you go through extended periods of time, it is the equivalent of doing multiple sets, and reps. The process is challenging but it makes your core stronger. The result is that each session or “set” that you go through, you have built a stronger mindset that when the next challenge comes along, it doesn’t impact you as hard and you have the ability to withstand it without giving up. You tend to “push through” same as you do that last set even through your arms are burning.
The repetitive cycle of life where I have went through periods of suffering have taught me how to persevere and move forward regardless of what is going on right now because in my mind I know that the bad of today is temporary and will be followed by happiness as that is the law of nature. That no circumstance is permanent.
I think our readers would appreciate hearing more about your values and what you think matters in life and career, etc. So our next question is along those lines. What’s a cultural value you protect at all costs?
Supporting your loved ones is a cultural value. I have brought that into my business by making it one of our core values.
We reinforce this with weekly lunches “Eating together builds bonds”, along with quarterly team events from basketball, to pickle ball, Rockets games, team dinners and consistent opportunities to build bonds.
These bonds then fuel our core values of supporting each other. We make it an expectation that you don’t leave team mates behind if they are drowning. That you support each other to get to the finish line, and help each other grow and learn. We hold these values with high regard and showing you uphold this value is a prerequisite for being part of our team and staying on our team.
Before we go, we’d love to hear your thoughts on some longer-run, legacy type questions. When do you feel most at peace?
I feel the most at peace in nature. I love taking trips up to Colorado, and hiking up to the top of the mountains where is it silent except for a few chirping of birds in near by trees. I love to have moments of prayer, reflection and gratitude. In that environment, surrounded by mountains, trees and clouds I am at peace. At those moments I am not thinking about the business or anything else but connecting with the creator.
