Community Highlights: Meet Tasharyia Smith of The Sunday Crumb

Today we’d like to introduce you to Tasharyia Smith.

Hi Tasharyia, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
The Sunday Crumb began with a simple desire to create something of my own. I spent most of my twenties working in upper management for a women’s clothing boutique, where I gained a solid understanding of what it takes to run and maintain a business. While I was grateful for that experience, I always knew I wanted to work for myself. Owning a small bakery had been a dream of mine for as long as I could remember.

After stepping away from my career, I felt God continuously pressing on my heart to take a leap of faith. Once I did, I started very small by baking bread and cookies and sharing them with close friends, family, and members of my church. The response was overwhelming. People genuinely loved the flavors and were shocked that I wasn’t selling them, especially the chocolate chip cookie. What I initially thought was encouragement out of kindness turned out to be belief. Real belief in what I could build. My friends spoke life into something I hadn’t fully seen yet, and that’s when I began to envision The Sunday Crumb becoming more than just a hobby.

When choosing the name, I wanted it to reflect the two things I hold closest to my heart, my faith and my family. “Crumb” is a tribute to my grandmother Josephine. She was born in Starkville, Mississippi, the youngest of six siblings and the smallest and sweetest among them, earning her the family nickname “Crumb.” “Sunday” represents renewal. It is a reminder that God makes all things new, and this dream would not have been possible without obedience to Him.

My goal with The Sunday Crumb is to encourage people to pause, slow down, and enjoy something sweet. Something that feels familiar and nostalgic. Whether it reminds you of a treat from your childhood or a moment shared with family around the table, I want each bite to feel comforting and intentional.

I began by perfecting my chocolate chip cookie, now known as the OG Chocolate Chip. From there, I started developing flavors that felt nostalgic and close to home. One of those was the cornbread cookie, inspired by my family’s tradition of always having a plate ready at every gathering. It is my way of sharing a piece of my family and my story, and it has become one of our best sellers.

Today, you can find me at weekend and weekday markets all around Houston. Through summer heat and cold winter mornings, I show up under my yellow tent, excited to share The Sunday Crumb with anyone willing to try it. What keeps me going are the familiar faces who return time and time again. Their support means more than I can put into words.

While I plan to open a brick-and-mortar bakery when the timing is right, for now, The Sunday Crumb lives in the community. You will find us around Houston. Just look for the big yellow tent and Mr. Crumb, the happy cookie man featured on every package.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It has not been a completely smooth road, but most of the challenges have come from learning curves rather than major setbacks. I make everything from scratch, from whipped marshmallow to pistachio paste, so creating a well-balanced cookie takes time. Developing new flavors often requires multiple trials, and I have learned to be patient and trust the process.

Markets have also brought valuable lessons. Whether it is unexpected rain or a lighter turnout, each experience has helped me grow and adapt. Recently, I have also built a small team to help with markets and cookie prep, known as the Crumb Crew. Learning to lean on community has been a blessing and an important part of this journey.

Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about The Sunday Crumb?
The Sunday Crumb is a Houston-based bakery specializing in small-batch, scratch-made cookies and baked goods rooted in nostalgia and intention. Each offering is thoughtfully developed with balanced flavors and comforting textures that feel familiar while still elevated.

What sets The Sunday Crumb apart is the care behind every detail. Recipes are developed slowly and intentionally, allowing each cookie to feel special without losing the warmth of a homemade treat. Many flavors are inspired by family traditions, childhood memories, and moments shared around the table. Fan favorites like the OG Chocolate Chip and the cornbread cookie reflect that blend of simplicity, storytelling, and comfort.

Beyond the product, The Sunday Crumb is built on faith, community, and connection. You can often find us popping up at markets across Houston under our bright yellow tent, showing up consistently and building relationships one cookie at a time. At its heart, the brand exists to make everyday feel like Sunday, a reminder to slow down, savor the moment, and enjoy something sweet.

What I am most proud of is the trust and loyalty of those who return time and time again. The Sunday Crumb is more than a bakery. It is a feeling, a pause in the day, and a moment of comfort shared.

Can you talk to us a bit about the role of luck?
I would not describe it as luck. I believe what has carried me is God’s favor, paired with obedience and support from the community around me. There have been moments where doors opened in ways I could not have planned on my own, and I truly believe those moments were guided.

Equally important has been the unwavering support of my friends, family, and church community. From encouragement in the early days to showing up at markets, sharing my work, and speaking life into the vision, their belief has been a constant source of strength. The combination of faith, community, and consistency has been the foundation of my growth, far more than luck ever could be.
