Today we’d like to introduce you to Artie Mitchell.
Hi Artie, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
My name is Artie Mitchell. I’m from Houston, Texas, and I was educated in Houston, Texas. I went to Texas Southern University on a football scholarship. I also attended and graduated from Pharmacy School at Texas Southern University. I have been practicing pharmacy for > 30 years. My legacy will be passed down to my children, Dr. Taylor Ann Mitchell, R.Ph., who already is working in the company, and my son, if he decides to join the company after completing pharmacy school. I decided to open my own pharmacy when I had a young family and had difficulty maintaining the burden of traveling for work as a Pharmacist, and also from experiencing chain store pharmacies lacking in the customer service department. This gave me the idea to open up a pharmacy across from a major chain store pharmacy, where I was able to gain patients because of our ability to be more personable with patients, in addition to providing better customer service, which in turn helped drastically improve patient care.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
No, there are always obstacles in every journey. I think as an entrepreneur, what is most important is to learn the fundamentals of business, regardless of the industry you are in. You have to understand Financial statements, your marketing plan, your business plan, and follow your playbook. You have to learn to be flexible within that playbook when you run into challenges and be able to adapt to the changes or challenges that will come.

My business is called Mitchell Rx Pharmacy, and it is a family-owned pharmacy with over 20 years of experience. We specialize in compounding and nutritional supplements. Can you talk to us a bit about happiness and what makes you happy?
The ability to take care of patients and create specific medications that they need & cannot find, to help improve quality of life and to help save their lives. It is truly the greatest payoff! Surprisingly, two of my children decided to go into pharmacy. I’m extremely happy about that as well. I hope to pass the business down to the next generation.
