Today we’d like to introduce you to Peggy Zhang.
Hi Peggy, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Before stepping into the world of baking professionally, I spent years working as a CPA. While it was a stable and rewarding career, baking had always been my creative escape. What began as a hobby slowly became a passion I couldn’t ignore. I’m completely self-taught, learning through countless hours of practice, experimentation, and curiosity in my own kitchen.
I started by baking for family, friends, and neighbors, and word naturally spread within my neighborhood. As more people connected with my desserts, I realized baking was no longer just something I loved—it was something I wanted to pursue fully. That love ultimately led me to open La Plume Bakery & Café, built from the ground up with care, persistence, and a lot of heart.
Today, my goal is to create unique desserts that feel both refined and approachable. I focus on using the best ingredients possible and offering lighter, healthier options compared to traditional bakeries, without sacrificing flavor or quality. Every dessert reflects my journey—from a home kitchen to a bakery—and my belief that food made with intention and love can truly bring people together.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
When we first opened three years ago, we were brand new to the neighborhood. Over time, we’ve been lucky to serve you with our own coffee, tea, cakes, and pastries — made the way we believe in.
Being small also comes with challenges. We can’t sell sandwiches with Subway right next door. We’re limited to just 1–2 cookie options even after Crumbl cookie opened in the same plaza (though thankfully, our cranberry dark chocolate cookie still has its fans 😄). Also, Lady M opened just three minutes away while we continue making our crepe cakes. Starbucks moved in next to our plaza and affected our coffee sales. Paris Baguette also opened last year very close to us.
Competing with big brands is never easy for a small neighborhood bakery. But your continues support, your love, and your loyalty are what keep us going. We are unique as we developed all our products in very own way and you loved them!
We’ve been impressed with La Plume Bakery and Cafe, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
La Plume Bakery & Café is a boutique bakery specializing in modern cakes, pastries, and seasonal desserts that blend refined design with comforting flavors. Our desserts are created to feel elegant yet approachable, perfect for both everyday treats and special celebrations.
What sets us apart is our globally inspired approach. We draw inspiration from Asian baking traditions, including Chinese, Singaporean, and Japanese recipes, along with French and American techniques. All of our desserts are made in-house using high-quality ingredients, with a focus on lighter, less-sweet options that highlight natural flavors. We are especially known for our custom cakes that look luxurious, taste amazing, and remain accessible.
I’m most proud of building La Plume organically—from baking in my home kitchen to growing through neighborhood support into a bakery rooted in love, creativity, and community. More than a bakery, La Plume is a place where thoughtful design, quality, and passion come together in every dessert.
How do you define success?
To me, success means becoming a better version of myself and being able to add value to other people’s lives. If what I do can bring happiness or make someone’s day a little better, that’s success.
