Daily Inspiration: Meet Cathy Mogler

Today we’d like to introduce you to Cathy Mogler.

Hi Cathy, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Publishing has been woven into the fabric of my life for as long as I can remember. It truly is in my DNA. Although my parents were divorced, my summers with my father were often spent in his office. He worked for a large national magazine company before eventually starting his own trade publications. Those summers offered more than time together—they created a shared language. Business became the common thread of our relationship, and through it, I was quietly introduced to the world of publishing.

Being with my dad in the office, watching conversations unfold, and seeing ideas transform into printed pages made the industry feel familiar and accessible. Over time, that early exposure evolved into something I felt comfortable stepping into myself. I began my career in newspaper advertising sales, learning how storytelling, strategy, and relationships intersect. That foundation opened doors to owning a newspaper of my own, working in radio, and later launching a public relations company. Each chapter expanded my understanding of media, communication, and the power of meaningful content.

Throughout my career, I’ve been immersed in every aspect of publishing—from concept and creation to production and distribution. While each role sharpened my skills, a deeper calling quietly formed beneath the surface. More than 15 years ago, I felt led to start a Christian women’s magazine. Like many women of faith, I wrestled with questions of purpose: What are my gifts? How can I honor God with my experience? What does obedience look like in my season of life?

After many years in the industry, my last professional role unexpectedly ended. In that season of uncertainty, I found myself asking what was next. It was then that God reminded me of the vision He had placed on my heart years earlier. I realized that every experience—every position, risk, and lesson—had been preparation for such a time as this.

The world is more chaotic than ever. Depression and anxiety are at alarming highs, and women are struggling with identity, worth, and belonging. I felt called not just to publish content, but to create a space of healing—one rooted in love, grace, and hope found in Jesus Christ.

In May of 2024, alongside my partner Nancy Kurnik, we launched The Sisterhood Magazine. Nancy brings decades of experience in the creative space, and together we offer more than 75 years of combined expertise in publishing, media, and storytelling. The magazine is available digitally and in print-on-demand and is now read by women around the world.

Our mission was simple: if we could help one woman—like Jesus leaving the ninety-nine to find the one—then the work would be worth it. God has done far more than we imagined. Today, The Sisterhood Magazine reaches thousands of women worldwide, offering content centered on faith and inspiration, family and relationships, health and wellness, home and hospitality, and visionaries and ventures. We are deeply humbled to be part of a growing sisterhood that points women back to hope, healing, and purpose.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
One of the greatest struggles in this journey has been sustainability. When the vision for a Christian women’s magazine was first revealed to me more than 15 years ago, the publishing landscape looked very different. magazines lived and died by advertising revenue, and print production was costly. Launching a startup magazine required significant upfront investment, long lead times, and the willingness to take substantial financial risk. At that stage of my life, I also needed a consistent income, which meant holding a job that generated stability. As much as I believed in the vision, the timing and economics made it challenging to pursue responsibly.

For many years, the idea remained on hold—not because it lacked purpose, but because it lacked a sustainable path forward. That waiting season was not wasted. It gave me time to gain experience, refine the vision, and watch the industry evolve. Over time, digital publishing began to open doors that simply didn’t exist before. Barriers to entry were lowered, distribution expanded globally, and new revenue models emerged that made sustainability possible without relying solely on traditional advertising.

Today, that shift has made all the difference. The Sisterhood Magazine is both digital and print-on-demand, allowing us to steward resources wisely while still offering a high-quality publication. We are now able to generate operating capital through online sales on Amazon and through subscription sales on our website. This model has allowed us to grow steadily, remain mission-focused, and reduce financial pressure that once made the vision feel unattainable.

What once felt like a delay was actually divine timing. The struggle for sustainability shaped our strategy, strengthened our faith, and ultimately positioned The Sisterhood Magazine to thrive in a way that honors both our calling and responsible business practices.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
At my core, I love art and stories that are written from the heart. I’ve always been drawn to creativity that feels real—words that carry honesty, beauty, and meaning. While I’ve spent my entire career in publishing, I’m not a traditional writer. I’ll be the first to admit that I don’t always put two perfect paragraphs together. I tend to write the way I think, with multiple ideas all at the same time. But what I am good at is recognizing a powerful story when I read one.

My strength lies in shaping, refining, and protecting the heart of a message. I’m a strong editor and curator, and I know how to help stories become clear without losing the voice behind them. I specialize in taking an idea—or a raw, honest testimony—and helping it reach people in a way that feels authentic and meaningful. That’s where my passion comes alive.

Together with my partner, Nancy Kurnik, who brings a beautiful, creative eye and deep design experience, we create something truly special. Nancy sees what I sometimes can’t, and together we balance heart and excellence. With the help of the good Lord and an incredible group of writers, we steward stories that resonate deeply with our readers.

What I’m most proud of is the space we’ve created—a place where women feel seen, encouraged, and reminded they are not alone. The Sisterhood Magazine isn’t about perfection; it’s about connection, faith, and hope. That authenticity is what sets us apart. We don’t just publish stories—we create a sisterhood, and that is something I will always hold with deep gratitude and humility.

Any big plans?
The future of The Sisterhood Magazine is rooted in growth with purpose. For the past two years, Nancy and I have self-funded the magazine and have essentially volunteered our time, alongside an incredibly gifted group of writers who have also poured their hearts into this work. It has truly been a labor of love and a ministry, built on obedience, faith, and a shared desire to serve women well.

As we look ahead, one of the biggest changes on the horizon is a focused effort on grants and sponsorships. While we will always honor the ministry aspect of what we do, we also recognize the importance of sustainability and stewardship. Our desire is not growth for growth’s sake, but growth that allows us to be more effective, more intentional, and more impactful. With additional support, we can compensate our writers, expand our reach, invest in stronger distribution, and continue producing high-quality content that meets women where they are.

We believe The Sisterhood Magazine has the potential to reach far beyond where we are today. Women everywhere are searching for connection, truth, and hope, and we want to continue creating a space that speaks to their hearts in meaningful ways. Grants and sponsorships will allow us to say “yes” to opportunities we’ve had to pass on and to build partnerships with organizations that align with our mission and values.

The vision moving forward is simple but bold: to grow responsibly, remain faith-centered, and expand our ability to serve women across generations and around the world. We trust that God will open the right doors at the right time, and we are excited to step into this next season with humility, courage, and expecta
