Today we’d like to introduce you to Eric & Myra Delgado.
Hi Eric & Myra, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
My wife and I had initially gone to a bee keeping class at Texas Bee Supply in Dayton (which is no longer open). We were looking for a way to spend quality time together and also take a break from parenting for a few hours, a date night if you will, but obviously during the day. We were both very nervous because we had no idea what we were doing in this class but it was spontaneous, somewhat hands on, and a good way for us to learn more about honey bees. We initially bought a NUC (short for nucleus) after the class was over and we began investing more and more time and money into cultivating our new hobby. After sharing our first honey harvest with friends and family the feed back we got was overwhelming and we knew we had something special. So we decided to begin thereafter to invest in more hives and pursue this new passion.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
We have had our share of “stings” along the way but we have managed to keep our hives happy and healthy. We have experienced losing whole hives and queens, and of course managing the delicate balance between bee keeping and family life. We are constantly learning as we go and have had to lean on other bee keepers knowledge and wisdom when we are truly challenged on areas that are still new to us.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about Delgado Honey Bee’s?
We are a small family owned and operated business that sells local raw unfiltered honey from Deer Park, TX. We pride ourselves in being an apiary that sells honey, beeswax, bee colonies, doing bee removals, and pollination services for Ag exemption. Our bees are not chemically treated and is a decision we made during our time as hobbyists. Another important thing to note is we do not use plastic but glass jars only. Our honey is not mixed with honeys from other states or countries. Our honey is not heated or processed so that it retains all of its natural properties which is important when it comes to raw local honey. Our Texas honey is truly straight from the hive to the glass jar!
How do you think about happiness?
Working the bees together with my wife in our apiary. It’s a way for us to decompress and get away from all the tech, social media and busyness of life. As well as focusing on being present with each other. Teaching our children about bee keeping at such a young age is also fullfilling. The idea of creating a legacy for our children that they would be proud to continue is something that makes us truly happy at the end of each day.
