Today we’d like to introduce you to Lexi Duran.
Hi Lexi, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I was just a mom who was obsessed with her baby, my husband purchased a camera for me to document our baby girls life. I started off by simply taking all of my daughter’s milestone photos and quickly realized I really loved being behind the camera. I never really thought it was possible to make a business for myself with my camera. My husband works so hard and I was then able to become a stay at home mom after my maternity leave ended. One day I went out to take my sisters senior photos and she asked “why don’t you do photography”, I then started thinking about that possibility and just decided to give it a shot. I went on a whim and posted a TikTok (@Lexx.Captures) asking if anyone wanted to book my portfolio minis. I was offering photography services for a very affordable price. I woke up the next morning with over 50 bookings. Although I know it definitely doesn’t happen like that for everyone I knew how blessed I was to have blown up and been given the opportunity to show my local town how much I really did have a passion for photography. I met soooo many amazing people and fell in love with every bit of photography. And now here I am, 9 months later with an amazing community of photographers and the best supports on all of my socials. I really am so grateful for everyone that is always supporting me in every way.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It definitely hasn’t been “smooth” however I am aware of how easy it was for me than others. I don’t take that for granted ever. Some struggles I’ve faced is being a mom and having lots of mom guilt for taking on so much at one time. Photography revolves around the weekends and my daughter is now in day care full time so it’’s hard feeling like I’m not there for her like I was before.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I’m a photographer based out of Houston, available worldwide. I specialize in lifestyle and wedding photography. I’m known for helping fellow beginners photographers and sharing what helped me get to where I am today. I’m so proud of myself for putting myself out there and showing how real it is being a mom and also having a small business.
I feel like I am set apart from other because I don’t look at other photographers with envy, when I started photography I reached out for help and got ignored. I try my best to respond to people that were in my exact same shoes and try to help people just like me. This world is big enough for us all and you really do have to have a community, it’s so good to lean on your fellow photographers in times of need.
Any advice for finding a mentor or networking in general?
One big thing I always preach is to not reach out to other businesses owners asking for EVERYTHING to be given to you. If you want to create something for yourself, you do have to work for it and do your research. Just like we all did. Little questions like asking for help or reassurance is normal, but simply asking how to become a photographer is soooo hard to answer.
And also remember never to compare yourself to those around you.
Anytime I want to learn something new for my business I do a TON of research and practice, practice, practice!! That’s the only way. Every single person learns in their own ways. And also look for those mentors if you’re more hands on.
