Inspiring Conversations with Dr. Danielle Young of Renewed Mind Counseling & Wellness, PLLC

Today we’d like to introduce you to Dr. Danielle Young.

Hi Dr. Danielle, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
My journey started when I was 13 years old, after I made an attempt to take my own life. While receiving inpatient mental health treatment, I experienced therapy that transformed the way I saw myself and my struggles. Upon discharging from the hospital, I entered CPS care and lived in a group home from ages 14-17. It was during that time that I experienced another beautiful encounter with therapy—one that continued to shape my healing and my future. My therapist, Ms. Tammy, played a major role in helping me rebuild, and our relationship solidified what I wanted to do with my life.

I will never forget what it felt like to be seen, heard, and understood. From that moment forward, I knew I wanted to provide that same kind of support to others. That purpose followed me into college, where I pursued the helping profession. I earned my Bachelor’s in Social Work, then went on to earn my Master’s in Counseling and Doctorate in Psychology.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It was not smooth at all. First, I continued to battle mental health struggles—so much so that I had to seek medication intervention. Second, I became a mom two years after starting college, and although I had significant support with my daughter, it was still very challenging balancing being a full-time student, a mother, and eventually a full-time worker so I could provide for her. Many times, I had to bring her to class with me because I was determined not to drop out. In addition, I faced financial challenges throughout my pursuit of higher education.

Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Renewed Mind Counseling & Wellness, PLLC?
RMCW is a group practice that offers a wide range of services, including individual, family, and couples therapy. Our team is comprised entirely of women who bring experience across a broad range of treatment specialties. We have couples therapy specialists, child and adolescent therapists, licensed chemical dependency counselors, and clinicians who are trauma-informed and EMDR-trained.

In addition to therapy services, our office also provides school-based counseling, targeted case management services (i.e., community resource referrals and linkage), immigration evaluations, mental health evaluations (e.g., anxiety, depression), and neurodivergent evaluations (e.g., autism and ADHD).

What sets us apart is that: (1) we are an all-women practice, (2) our team is made up entirely of women of color, (3) we are committed to providing affordable, high-quality mental healthcare through sliding scale options to help reduce cost barriers, and (4) we accept EAPs, which many practices choose not to accept due to lower reimbursement rates.

We’d love to hear about any fond memories you have from when you were growing up?
Returning to my hometown of Milwaukee to spend my summer breaks with my paternal family.
