Today we’d like to introduce you to Cristin Mathew.
Hi Cristin, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I am an Orthopedic Surgeon & Sports Medicine Specialist who serves the community with performing complex hip and knee restoration procedures and muscle preserving robotically assisted hip and knee replacements. I went to medical school as the Via College of Osteopathic Medicine in Virginia on the Virginia Tech Campus where I learned the importance of function and preservation of anatomy. I later went on to my Orthopedic Residency training at Northwell Health in New York where I learned to from several industry thought leaders and influencers.
I moved back to Houston for my fellowship in Orthopedic Surgery and Sports Medicine at Houston Methodist. During my fellowship, I acquired skills to treat complex procedures with minimally invasive techniques and also learned how to manage medical issues on various levels from high school to the professional arena. I had the distinguished opportunity to serve on medical staff of the Texans, Rockets, Dynamo and the World Series Champions Houston Astros.
I presently work at All American Orthopedics in Clear Lake and serve as a team physician for the professional Ultimate Team Houston Havoc, Dickinson ISD, and serves as a physician for several regional and national rugby tournaments and games for USA Rugby and National Collegiate Rugby. I am also a thought leader and consultant for orthopedic companies and provide lectures and opportunities to mentor students and educate other physicians.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It has been a process to grow a practice. Being available is critical to growing a surgical practice in order to build volume, trust and presence. It’s taken a lot of time and sacrifice away from family and friends to be available to patients. In a saturated market and having several large competitors with large marketing budgets, I have been able to build a practice with several loyal patients and colleagues that share their success stories.
As you know, we’re big fans of All American Orthopedics & Sports Medicine. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
All American Orthopedics & Sports Medicine has been a well established practice in the Clear Lake area for decades. With presence on local high school sidelines to emergency rooms, the practice has grown through its presence and availability to the community. The practice is built on specialists based on body parts, and patients can be assured to receive the efficient personal care that is aimed to return them to a improved quality of life.
All American separates itself from the competitors with an availability and access that can be difficult to achieve with specialist care. We have dedicated ourselves to take care of student athletes and the community with all types of resources and work to provide them the most accessible and affordable care around.
The providers at the practice also provide patients with up to date evidence based treatments and also has access to some research opportunities and cutting edge treatments not available at other nearby institutions.
I focus on Hip & Knee problems and provide minimally invasive joint preservation procedures including realignment , transplants, and repairs while also performing muscle preserving robotically assisted hip and knee replacements. Through my practice, I look to find ways of providing cutting edge techniques to minimize trauma and accelerate recovery. These techniques have provided my patients half the recovery time with limited pain compared to traditional approaches. I also provide more holistic biologic options like platelet rich plasma, bone marrow aspirate concentrate and lipogems injections.
Using a patient’s fat to help heal and decrease pain has demonstrated to help several patients allowing them to either prevent or delay surgery.
I also make it a point to stay up to date on treatment options and new strategies. I attend several meetings through the year and also provide presentations and educate surgeons on a local and national level.
