Today we’d like to introduce you to Kelley Cook.
Kelley, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I started dance lessons at age 6!! I was chosen as a class leader at age 10, became a class assistant at 13, started teaching on my own at 18, & opened my own studio at age 29! I am on my 18th season as a studio owner & competition team director!
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
For the most part, it’s been smooth. There’s always drama in the dance world, but nothing that would set me back. I love my job & after almost 30 years of teaching, I have gained enough experience to work my way through any hardship!
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I am am a dance teacher & choreographer. I teach technique classes in ballet, jazz & tap (leaps & turns too) & choreograph recital routines, solos, duets, trios, small groups, large groups & lines for competition! I specialize in tap. Tap has always been my favorite & my tap choreography has been successful over the years! I am most proud of instilling a passion for dance in my students that lasts a lifetime. Whether they continue to dance as adults, enroll their kids in dance, are obsessed with watching dance or become teachers themselves, I love the thank yous I receive for helping create their love of dance!
What matters most to you?
I want my students to love what they do. It doesnt matter to me if they win or can do the latest trending dance tricks. What matters is the joy they feel when they dance. The comforting atmosphere of being with friends at the studio & the lessons from being on a team are also important! I just want my students to be proud of their dance journey, and never settle for less than they are capable of achieving♡ When I look back on my days as a student, I don’t particularly remember what award I received at competition. I remember the moments backstage, the road trips, the dinners with my team, & the many inside jokes we shared. Those memories mean more than a trophy!
