Today we’d like to introduce you to La Toya Luces-Sampson.
Hi La Toya, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I am Dr. La Toya Luces-Sampson. I am a board-certified OBGYN, a life coach, and the co-owner of The General Heating & Air, a new HVAC company, alongside my husband, Ade.
My journey has always been defined by a commitment to service and education, though the vehicle for that service has evolved over time. I spent over a decade as an OBGYN, caring for women during their most vulnerable moments. However, after the pandemic, I found myself at a crossroads. I was a new mom, severely burned out, and realized I needed to take ownership of my own life to continue serving others effectively.
That realization led to a major pivot. I left traditional employment and ventured fully into entrepreneurship. I continued practicing as a travel doctor, grew an educational TikTok channel, Dr. Toya OBGYN, to over 8.6 million views and started coaching other physician mothers. Then my husband and I finally acted on our long-held dream of moving to Houston. It has everything we have always wanted for our children—family, diversity, and an amazing culture. Once we arrived, we wanted to build a legacy that combined our unique strengths—my medical background and his military discipline. That is how The General Heating & Air was born.
Today, I use my background in health to ensure families in our community have safe, clean air to breathe, while Ade ensures the technical precision of every job.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
I was trained in a medical culture where excellence was not optional, and self-sacrifice was the norm. Early in my career, I worked 72-hour shifts and made life-and-death decisions daily. I was conditioned to give everything to my work until I had nothing left for myself.
The breaking point came during the pandemic. I was a new mother, isolated from my village, and working in a high-pressure environment. I was suffering in silence, trying to be everything to everyone. I realized that if I wanted to continue caring for people at a high level, I had to change my environment.
Leaving a traditional medical practice to become an entrepreneur saved my career. It taught me that I could define success on my own terms. Now, as we build The General Heating & Air, we are applying those same lessons of resilience.
We are building a business from the ground up in a new city, balancing parenthood with entrepreneurship, and working to establish a company culture that honors our family values.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about The General Heating & Air?
The General Heating & Air is a residential HVAC company serving Northwest Houston. We are a Military + Medical family business built on a foundation of excellence, service, safety, and trust.
My husband, Ade, leads the technical side of the business, applying the discipline he gained in the military maintaining critical mission equipment. He brings a mastery of high-level troubleshooting and quality assurance that ensures precision in every installation and repair. I bring my medical background to the service side, ensuring we prioritize the health of the families we serve.
We treat your home’s air quality like a vital sign. This is deeply personal for us. My husband saw firsthand how important air quality and temperature were in the military while setting up bases for different missions, but it really hit home when he was diagnosed with sleep apnea. It is more than just snoring; it is a silent killer that is made worse by polluted air.
Our children have not been able to escape it either. Our son was diagnosed with severe allergies and sleep apnea as well, undergoing surgery before the age of three. Our daughter has had several ER visits for breathing issues, all before the age of two.
Because of this, we know firsthand that an AC unit isn’t just a machine that makes things cold; it is the lungs of your home. We specialize in the “Health of the Home.” We look at the whole picture—filtration, humidity, and airflow—to ensure your environment supports your family’s wellness just like it needs to support ours.
I am most proud that we are building a legacy of intergenerational freedom and impact. We are veteran-owned and family-run, and we see our own family in every home we enter. Our mission is to educate homeowners so they can be safe in the place they spend the most time. Clean air and a comfortable home aren’t just about health; they are about saving energy and saving money.
We are officially open for business and ready to serve Cypress, Katy and surrounding communities starting in March 2026!
We love surprises, fun facts and unexpected stories. Is there something you can share that might surprise us?
I think the most surprising thing is that my husband and I are actually in business together. We have always dreamed of having a family business, but we honestly never imagined it would be possible given our vastly different backgrounds—he was a master mechanic in the military, and I am an OBGYN. On paper, those two worlds don’t seem to mix.
But here we are, and it works beautifully. We realized that blending his technical precision with my focus on health created a unique standard for home service. We are super excited about what this means for us, the legacy of freedom we are building for our family, and the level of care we can now bring to our community.
