Today we’d like to introduce you to Sandy Olive.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?

Sandra Olive – Founder of A Dependable Senior Sitter & Sandy’s Safe Haven
My name is Sandra Olive, and my journey into senior care began when I worked as a Resident Assistant at Emeritus of Sugar Land. During my time there, I primarily served in the memory care unit, caring for residents living with Alzheimer’s and dementia.
While I was deeply committed to my role, I began to recognize significant gaps in the level of individualized, compassionate care that many elderly residents were receiving. I also saw the financial burden placed on families — the cost of quality care was simply prohibitive for many who desperately needed it. These experiences profoundly impacted me. It was in that memory care unit that I discovered my true calling.
I realized that I wanted to create something different — something more personal, more dignified, and more accessible for families navigating Alzheimer’s and dementia care.
With that vision in mind, my daughters and I made the decision to open A Dependable Senior Sitter, a care model rooted in compassion, reliability, and a commitment to treating every resident like family. Our goal was to provide exceptional, hands-on care in a safe and nurturing home environment.
Shortly after opening, I welcomed my very first resident — a Veteran referred through the VA. That experience became a pivotal turning point. I was later informed that I could become a Veterans Foster Home provider, an opportunity that allowed me to serve those who had served our country. From that moment forward, the mission expanded, and the work grew rapidly.
As the need increased, so did our vision. This led to the creation of Sandy’s Safe Haven, further strengthening our commitment to providing specialized care for seniors living with Alzheimer’s and dementia in a setting that prioritizes dignity, safety, and individualized attention.
What began as an observation of what was lacking has evolved into a lifelong mission: to redefine senior care by offering families peace of mind and ensuring that every resident receives the respect, compassion, and exceptional care they deserve.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
For me, the caregiving itself has always been the easiest part. Providing hands-on care, ensuring safety, managing daily needs — those are responsibilities I carry with confidence and commitment.
What is far more difficult is the emotional weight that comes with this work.
When you care for someone intimately over a long period of time — especially individuals living with Alzheimer’s or dementia — you don’t simply perform a job. You build a bond. You learn their stories, their habits, their fears, their humor. You become part of their daily life, and they become part of yours.
Naturally, you fall in love with them.
When they pass away or leave your care, it is not just the loss of a client — it feels like losing a member of your own family. The grief is real. The pain is real. You mourn them just as their loved ones do.
These moments are both the highest and lowest points of my career as a caregiver.
The highest, because I know I was trusted with someone’s mother, father, spouse, or grandparent during their most vulnerable season.
The lowest, because loving deeply means grieving deeply.
But I would not change it. The ability to love and be loved in this profession is what makes it meaningful. It is what defines my work ethic and my purpose. Caregiving is not simply what I do — it is who I am.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
⸻
I am the founder of A Dependable Senior Sitter and Sandy’s Safe Haven, family-owned residential care homes specializing in Alzheimer’s and Dementia care. Alongside my daughters, I provide highly personalized, hands-on care in a true home environment for seniors who can no longer safely live alone.
I specialize in memory care. My focus is creating calm, structured, and nurturing spaces that reduce anxiety and confusion for those living with cognitive decline. We tailor care to each individual — their routines, behaviors, preferences, and personal history — so they feel safe, understood, and respected.
We are also proud to serve as a Veterans Foster Home provider, caring for Veterans with the dignity and honor they deserve.
What I am most proud of is the intimacy of our care. Because we are family-owned and directly involved in daily operations, our residents are not numbers — they are part of our lives. We know their stories. We celebrate with them. We sit beside them in their most vulnerable moments.
What sets us apart is that this is not just a service we provide — it is a calling we live. Caregiving comes naturally to me, but the relationships are what define the work. We love deeply, and we care with intention. That level of connection and accountability is something you cannot replicate in larger facilities.
At the heart of everything we do is one belief: every senior deserves to age with dignity, safety, and genuine compassion.
What were you like growing up?
⸻
Growing up, I faced significant challenges at a very young age. As a toddler, I lost one of my eyes to cancer and have worn a prosthetic eye ever since. Because of that, I was bullied quite a bit throughout my childhood.
Personality-wise, I was extremely introverted. I kept my head down most of the time, trying to hide my eye and avoid attention. For many years, I allowed that insecurity to define how I showed up in the world.
Everything shifted for me around the age of thirteen during a visit to MD Anderson. A nurse gave me what I now consider a life-changing reality check. She showed me patients who were facing circumstances far more severe than mine. In that moment, my perspective changed. I realized that my loss, while significant, did not have to limit my confidence, my purpose, or my future.
That experience built resilience in me. It shaped my empathy. It taught me to see beyond appearances and into the heart of people — which is something I carry into my caregiving today.
My interests continue to evolve, but at the core, they center around expanding my businesses to serve more families navigating the never-ending journey of Alzheimer’s and dementia — a journey that often feels like it holds their loved ones hostage. I am passionate about helping others through that process with dignity and compassion.
And beyond my work, I have a deep desire to travel the world — to experience different cultures, perspectives, and ways of caring — always growing, always learning
