Check Out Nilda Pagan’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Nilda Pagan.

Hi Nilda, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
My journey started at home, teaching myself how to do my own hair. What began as necessity quickly became passion. During a difficult season in my life when I experienced homelessness, I received a makeover that changed more than just my appearance — it changed how I felt about myself. That moment made me feel human again. It restored dignity, confidence, and hope.
That experience shaped the foundation of my business. I knew I didn’t just want to style hair — I wanted to offer services with intention, care, and a personal touch.
I’ve now been licensed for three years, and the journey hasn’t always been easy. One of my biggest struggles was acceptance — feeling like I constantly had to prove myself. Over time, I realized that my responsibility is to give my absolute best. If someone can’t recognize that, it’s simply not my audience. That mindset shift changed everything for me as both a professional and an entrepreneur.

What makes Urban Stylez and Fades different is the level of detail and personalization I bring to every service. I focus on precision, education, and collaboration. I allow my clients to participate in their service — whether that’s learning about their hair, understanding maintenance, or simply being heard. I meet people where they are, whether that’s in life or in their hair journey. My goal is for every client to leave not just looking better, but feeling valued and confident.

Today, my work is rooted in empowerment. Hair is the service, but transformation is the purpose.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It definitely has not been a completely smooth road. Like many entrepreneurs, I’ve faced both personal and professional challenges along the way. Early on, one of my biggest struggles was acceptance — feeling like I had to constantly prove myself, my talent, and my worth in the industry. That mindset can be exhausting.

Starting from a place where I was self-taught and building from home, I had to develop confidence in my skills while also learning the business side of the industry. There were moments of doubt, financial pressures, and the reality of rising expenses that come with running a business.

However, each challenge refined me. I learned that my responsibility is to operate in excellence and give my best every time. I also realized that not everyone is meant to see your value — and that’s okay. Growth came when I stopped seeking validation and started standing firmly in my craft and my purpose.

The road hasn’t been perfect, but every obstacle strengthened my resilience, sharpened my discipline, and deepened my commitment to serving my clients with intention and integrity.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I am a licensed cosmetologist and the owner of Urban Stylez and Fades, where I specialize in detailed braid work, precision fades, color services, and customized transformations. My focus is healthy hair, clean execution, and creating styles that complement each client’s lifestyle and personality.
I’m known for my attention to detail and the level of care I bring to every appointment. Whether it’s a braid pattern, a fade blend, or a color application, I take my time to ensure the final result is polished and intentional. I don’t believe in rushing artistry.

What I’m most proud of is the experience I create for my clients. I’ve built a reputation not just for quality work, but for making people feel comfortable, heard, and confident. Many clients tell me they appreciate being educated during their service — understanding maintenance, product use, and how to care for their hair between visits.

What sets me apart is that I approach hair with empathy. Because of my personal journey, I understand how deeply connected confidence is to appearance. I meet clients where they are — whether they’re rebuilding their self-esteem, starting a new chapter in life, or simply wanting to elevate their look. My services are collaborative. I involve clients in the process so they feel empowered, not just styled.

For me, it’s never just about the finished look. It’s about the transformation — internally and externally.

Are there any apps, books, podcasts, blogs or other resources you think our readers should check out?
I rely on a few key resources that help me stay grounded and continue growing both personally and professionally. I regularly use the YouVersion Bible App for daily scripture and reflection. My faith plays a big role in how I lead, serve, and navigate challenges, so starting my day spiritually centered helps me operate with clarity and purpose.
I also spend time learning through YouTube, especially content focused on salon business strategy, personal development, mental health, and habit-building. As an entrepreneur, I believe continuous learning is essential. Whether it’s improving systems, strengthening mindset, or understanding how to build sustainable routines, I’m always looking for ways to grow.
For me, growth isn’t just about business success — it’s about becoming a healthier, more disciplined, and more intentional person overall. When I grow personally, my clients and my business benefit as well.
