Today we’d like to introduce you to Emily Lopez.
Hi Emily, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
Color Analysis isn’t something I stumbled upon; it’s the natural culmination of years in the beauty industry helping women feel confident in their own skin.
My first recollection of seasonal color analysis is hearing my mom tell me when I was a teenager that she thought I was a “Winter”. I had no idea what she meant, but I was intrigued. Years later, as color analysis was starting to reemerge thanks to social media, I instantly made the connection and knew it was something I wanted to explore further.
I found a company that would certify me virtually, and I started doing mini analyses on my existing makeup clients. I found that they were increasingly more pleased with their makeup purchases, and my makeup artistry went to a new level.
Thanks to a few photos I had posted in my stories, a friend tagged me when a local boutique posted about wanting to partner with a color analyst. I had never done anything as large of scale as they were envisioning, but I was confident in my abilities and was honest with them. They took a chance on me, and the rest is history.
Every experience, every client, and every lesson along the way has led me here. I’m approaching 200 clients served, and I’m grateful every day that I have the best job in the world — opening my clients’ eyes to how unique and beautiful they truly are.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Every opportunity has struggles along the way. A wise person once said – “we fail forward to success.”
One of the biggest struggles, and one I’m currently still working through, is building faster than I have staffed. I’ve always operated my beauty business(es) as a solo-preneur with ad hoc contract labor. I’m at the point where I’m falling behind on administrative tasks and showing up on social media, because there’s simply not enough time to do it all. I’m currently in the process of interviewing to find the right additions to the team. But honestly, I should have done this sooner.
Another challenge has been finding my sweet spot with pricing. I think sometimes people get sticker-shock when they see the investment for color analysis. I want to honor my community, while at the same time facing the reality that this is a one-time service. There are a lot of referrals to gain, but no repeat business from individual clients unless an analyst offers additional services.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
My process is one that I have developed from scratch via education, trial and error. It’s not a script that was handed to me. I start by determining if a person is cool or warm. There are many ways to test for this, but my favorite was is via the metal test — does one look better in silver or gold? My background as a makeup artist comes in super handy here; I’ve foundation matched thousands of people, so seeing and selecting the proper undertone comes very easily and naturally to me.
Once I determine your undertone, I’ve already eliminated half of the possible seasons. From there, I analyze contrast and chroma, the second and third factors that determine your specific season, by swatching my clients in all the primary colors of their top two seasons. It’s very important to me that my clients see the difference and don’t just take my word for it. Once you see the difference, you can’t un-see it. My signature sessions are just as much a crash course in color analysis as they are discovering your particular seasonal profile. I started my career out as an elementary school educator, and I’m still an educator at heart.
We all have a different way of looking at and defining success. How do you define success?
Oh man, I could talk about this for hours because my definition of success has changed over the last decade.
Success to me is waking up excited to go to work each day. It’s also being able to prioritize your life based on your core values. If I’m making more money than I know what to do with, but my family never sees me, I’ve missed the mark. In simpler terms, success is alignment.
