Hidden Gems: Meet Donna Castaneda of Souther Sugar Spa

Today we’d like to introduce you to Donna Castaneda.

Hi Donna, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I got started in the aesthetic business shortly after graduating from aesthetic school 17 years ago. I spent nearly a decade working alongside plastic surgeons in my area, where I gained invaluable hands-on experience, advanced training, and a deep understanding of patient care and results-driven treatments.

After those years of learning and growth, I took a leap of faith and decided to open my own space. I started small, with a modest building and a big vision. Through hard work, dedication, and the incredible support of my clients and community, my business has grown into a fully functioning aesthetic practice that I’m very proud of today.

What makes this journey especially meaningful to me is that my business allows me to do more than just provide spa services. I’m able to help people feel confident in their own skin while also using my platform to raise awareness about autoimmune disease — something very close to my heart. It’s been both a professional and personal mission, and I feel incredibly blessed to do what I love while helping others.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
“No, it definitely has not been a smooth road. Like many small business owners, I’ve faced my share of trials and tribulations along the way. There have been difficult seasons — from navigating life-changing personal events, to the impact of COVID, to shifts in the economy that affected both my clients and my business.

As our area has grown rapidly, I’ve also had to adjust to rising rental costs, increased supply prices, and the constant need to adapt in a competitive industry. On a personal level, living with an autoimmune disease has brought its own challenges, especially with burnout and fatigue.

But through every obstacle, I’ve leaned on my faith, my family, my friends, and the incredible support system around me. Those challenges didn’t stop me — they strengthened me. They taught me resilience, patience, and how to lead with both heart and determination.

So while it hasn’t been easy, every struggle has helped shape the successful business I have today, and I’m proud of the perseverance it took to get here.

I’m very active in the community and stay involved with charitable events.. the thing that I think it’s important for people to know about me is that I am extremely compassionate. I love that my career helps others find confidence despite the diagnosis. Also, I think it’s important to know that I started my journey as an aesthetician because I have struggled with my own confidence and own skin issues so I wanted to learn more, not only to help me but help others.. I turned my passion into purpose when I I decided to be an aesthetician

If you had to, what characteristic of yours would you give the most credit to?
What made me successful was my resilience I refuse to give up. I refuse to let my diagnosis as an autoimmune lupus warrior determine me from my dreams.. leading with a compassionate heart is made it easy to relate to others that are battling with skin issues or just need a place to come and relax. Professionalism is extremely important to me however, I like to get to know my patient. Heart so I can relate to them and be more than just an aesthetician. I treat my clients like family..
