Community Highlights: Meet Linda Ellis of Pettis Counseling PLLC

Today we’d like to introduce you to Linda Ellis.

Linda Ellis

Hi Linda, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I am Linda Pettis Ellis, often called Dr. Linda by those who work with me. My career journey began as a licensed professional nurse, where I dedicated my time and energy to caring for individuals in public health and critical health situations. I soon realized that while nursing fulfilled my desire to help others, it was the teaching aspect that I cherished most. My teaching journey started early—at the age of 17, I taught children at my church’s Vacation Bible School. This experience ignited a lifelong commitment to education, and since then, I have been an educator at heart, whether as a counselor, a teacher, nurse, or in any other capacity. Teaching has always been my calling.
I share this background to give you a glimpse of who is writing this book. Born as an African American female in a family with six siblings in Texas, I am the sixth of seven children. I have spent most of my life in Texas, with brief travels elsewhere. The first part of my career was devoted to nursing while raising my young children with my husband. However, my love for teaching compelled me to pursue further education, leading me to transition from nursing to teaching science in secondary schools.
During a significant transition in my life, I faced the challenges of domestic violence recovery, which prompted me to go back to school and earn my master’s degree in counseling. I started this journey as a married mother and completed it as a single mother. I continued in public education as a school counselor and educator.
I entertained the idea of becoming a doctor in educational psychology while in graduate school. This idea resonated deeply with me, and as a single mother of children ranging from elementary to high school ages, I took on the challenge of pursuing a doctorate degree.

Here is my first book I am launching in March, 2026. It is based on a followup to my dissertation and this is a summary of the book that I would also like to share.
Cultural Crossroads: A Journey Through Identity and Belonging offers an in-depth exploration of the female experience as women grapple with issues of self-esteem, cultural identity, and the ongoing pursuit of belonging. The book examines female self-esteem, wellness, and cultural identity in the United States from the 1990s to the present day. It focuses on the experiences of women from diverse backgrounds, including Native American, African American, Hispanic/Latin American, Asian American, and white Caucasian cultures.
The content is thoughtfully organized into several key sections. It begins with historical perspectives, providing context for the challenges and triumphs women have faced over recent decades. The narrative then shifts to the development of self-identity, highlighting the unique journeys women undertake to understand and define themselves.
Theoretical frameworks and practical approaches for building self-esteem are presented, addressing different life stages from youth through senior adulthood. The book includes in-depth case studies that illuminate the nuances of cultural identity across various communities.
Through intimate personal stories and professional counseling insights, the book delves into how women confront and overcome obstacles related to self-worth, societal expectations, and the complexities of cultural heritage. These narratives reveal pathways to healing, self-acceptance, and resilience, demonstrating that past struggles and pain do not determine one’s future.
Readers are encouraged to embrace their unique strengths, cultivate self-compassion, and seek fulfillment through authentic connections with others. The book concludes with thoughtful reflections, an examination of social determinants of health, and a collection of practical activities suitable for individuals at all stages of life, from youth to seniors.
This structured approach provides a comprehensive, multidimensional perspective on identity and belonging across diverse female populations, offering valuable insights and practical tools for personal growth and community connection. Now, in the current stage of my journey, I have established a private practice dedicated to helping individuals heal from childhood trauma and guiding them toward personal growth. My work is centered on supporting people as they reclaim their sense of self, overcome past wounds, and build healthier, more fulfilling lives. Drawing on my diverse experiences and education, I am passionate about empowering others to find hope and transformation through compassionate counseling and evidence-based practices.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Looking back, I see how being the sixth child in a large family shaped my outlook on life. As one of the younger siblings, I often felt unseen and struggled to find my voice in the midst of our bustling household. That sense of invisibility lingered, occasionally making it challenging for me to assert myself or feel truly acknowledged. At 17, I survived sexual assault—a trauma that changed my life and tested my strength. The pain and confusion I experienced at that time left lasting marks, but they also fueled my resolve to be a source of support and understanding for others. Later, I endured domestic violence during my first marriage and ultimately sought refuge in a women’s shelter. These moments of vulnerability were both humbling and transformative, marking important milestones in my path toward healing and self-empowerment.
My journey has also included decisions and circumstances that carried social stigma. I became pregnant before marriage, went through two divorces, and navigated the challenges of single motherhood with my three sons. Raising them brought both immense joy and hardship, particularly as their father’s struggles with marijuana and other illegal substances affected our family. Supporting my sons through their academic, emotional, and social difficulties required immense patience and strength, especially as we coped with the impact of their father’s choices.
Every adversity I have faced has deepened my empathy and strengthened my character. These experiences, while painful, became the foundation for my commitment to education, counseling, and advocacy. My life’s story is one of survival, growth, and hope—a testament to the power of perseverance and the necessity of compassion for oneself and for others.
