Inspiring Conversations with The Nursery Atelier Deniz Pirincci Ercan & Ruohan Wang of The Nursery Atelier

Today we’d like to introduce you to The Nursery Atelier Deniz Pirincci Ercan & Ruohan Wang.

The Nursery Atelier, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
The Nursery Atelier was born from a very personal place. We both became mothers while navigating demanding careers, and we quickly realized how overwhelming it can be to prepare for a baby. There is so much information, so many products, and often very little guidance on what truly matters. Yet we actually came to this realization from very different experiences.
Ruohan comes from a strategy consulting background and has always had a strategic approach to problem-solving. She brought the same professional mindset to researching baby products. She built detailed spreadsheets, read countless product reviews, compared brands, and spent hours trying to understand what was truly necessary. It quickly became overwhelming — almost as if it required a second mind just to navigate all the information available.
Deniz spent years in scientific research where evidence and careful evaluation are central to every decision, but during her first pregnancy she was working right up until her due date and simply didn’t have the time to research much at all. By the time the baby arrived, she had accumulated so many products from family and friends that many of them were never even used or needed in the end.
While sharing those motherhood experiences, we realized there had to be a better way. That’s how The Nursery Atelier began — as a way to help parents choose products that truly fit their lifestyle and needs while removing much of the stress that comes with researching everything on their own. We focus on thoughtful, minimal choices rooted in safety, functionality, and longevity — creating product lists and nursery spaces that not only support the baby but also make life easier for parents as they adjust to this beautiful but demanding new chapter.
Today, we specialize in registry guidance, baby accessory curation, and nursery design and setup, serving families nationwide virtually and in person across Greater Houston.
Fun fact: We are both relatively new to Houston, having moved here just over a year ago, but it turns out our paths had almost crossed long before that. We both lived in London around the same time, likely walking through the same neighborhoods and riding the same tube without ever knowing it. It wasn’t until we arrived in Houston that we finally met. At the time, Deniz had just had her second baby and Ruohan had recently moved to the city with her seven-month-old. Like many mothers new to a place, we were hoping to find community, so we joined Peanut — an app often described as a “dating app for moms.” We matched there, met for coffee, and what started as a simple meetup quickly grew into a friendship rooted in motherhood, which eventually became the foundation for The Nursery Atelier.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Like most new ventures, the journey has come with its share of challenges. There are certainly moments when progress feels slower than you hope.
We started The Nursery Atelier while balancing family life, young children, and the realities of building something from scratch. In many cases, new businesses begin by serving close friends and family, but being new to both Houston and the US meant we didn’t have that natural network to lean on and had to build ours from the ground up.
Because of that, we’ve been very intentional about becoming part of the community — connecting with local mothers, joining groups, and meeting other founders working in the baby and family space. It has been incredibly encouraging to see how welcoming and collaborative people have been throughout this process. We’ve met many inspiring women in business who share a genuine desire to support families, and those relationships have helped us learn how to start and grow a business in the most meaningful way.
Another aspect of building The Nursery Atelier from the ground up has been introducing a non-traditional type of support in the baby space. While expecting parents are familiar with booking traditional services in prenatal or postpartum care, personalized registry guidance, accessory curation, and nursery planning are still relatively novel offerings. In many ways, we are helping pioneer a new category of support for families — bringing together safety, functionality, and design to help parents prepare for their baby with greater clarity and confidence.
Today, each nursery we complete and every parent who feels more confident preparing for their baby reminds us why we started in the first place — and gives us the motivation to keep moving forward through whatever challenges come our way.

Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
The Nursery Atelier is a boutique service offering registry guidance, baby accessory (toys, clothes, and baby gear) curation, and nursery design and set up. Every piece we recommend in these suites is evaluated for safety, functionality, durability, and design. What sets us apart is the balance we bring between beauty and these prerequisites. While nurseries are often designed purely for aesthetics, we approach them with the understanding that they must also support the everyday realities of caring for a newborn.
Our process is also deeply personal. We spend time understanding each family’s lifestyle, space, and preferences so that the registry, bundle, or nursery we design for them truly reflects their needs. Some families want a calm, minimalist space, while others want something playful and layered — our role is to guide them toward options that make their lives easier.
At the heart of The Nursery Atelier is the belief that preparing for a baby should feel exciting and supported, not overwhelming. We simply help carry some of that load so parents can focus on what truly matters. For some, this means protecting their mental and physical wellbeing; for others, it means wrapping up demanding work before the baby’s arrival.
We primarily support first-time expecting parents. At the same time, we have found that many friends and family members want to give thoughtful gifts but aren’t always sure what would truly help the parents. Our services can also be gifted, or we can curate a beautiful bundle of baby essentials on behalf of the gift giver.
We also collaborate with other businesses in the baby and family space. For example, we partner with photographers and curate lookbooks to help families select outfits and complementary pieces that photograph beautifully. It’s another way we help families feel confident and prepared for moments they’ll want to remember.
Lastly, we continue supporting families as their children grow. Whether it’s refreshing a nursery into a toddler space or helping parents select developmentally appropriate toys and essentials, we enjoy being a trusted resource throughout those early years of family life.
Our journey typically begins with a conversation — Atelier Intro, where we take the time to understand the family’s or gift giver’s needs and expectations.

What was your favorite childhood memory?
Deniz:
One of my most vivid childhood memories is spending time at my grandmother’s home. My mother was a teacher, so during the day my grandmother cared for me, and her house became the place where our family naturally gathered. I remember the comforting smell of food cooking in the kitchen and the warmth of everyone coming together… my cousins and their families… we played games, shared stories, or sometimes just simply spent time around the table. It always felt safe, welcoming, and full of life.
Looking back, I realize how much those moments shaped the way I think about spaces. A home isn’t just about how it looks, it’s about how it makes people feel and how it brings people together. In many ways, that perspective carries into the work we do at The Nursery Atelier today. When we design nurseries, we’re not just creating rooms; we’re helping families create spaces where their own memories will begin.

Ruohan:
When I was seven, I remember being dropped off at a family friend’s house for the night thinking it was a sleepover. The next day, my baby brother came home.
Looking back, most of what I remember were holding him for the first time, giving him a bottle, his first steps, the first time he danced to music, and celebrating his birthdays.
We had goldfish back then that kept mysteriously dying. One day I discovered why – I caught my brother scooping them out of the tank to “play” with them. At the time, it was just another funny story.
What I didn’t see back then was my parents’ sleep deprivation. I didn’t see my mom navigating life with a newborn and a school-aged child. I didn’t understand what it meant for her to stay at home for two years, or how hard daycare transitions must have been.
My parents only told me about these once I became a mother myself. Behind every magical childhood memory is an adult quietly managing the invisible load – researching, planning, organizing, adjusting, absorbing stress so their children can simply feel safe and happy.
Today, through Nursery Atelier, I hope to be a small part of that unseen support for other families so their children, too, grow up remembering only the dancing, the birthdays, and the joy.
