Today we’d like to introduce you to Bob Alanis.
Bob, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
We opened Bob’s Taco Station in 1991, my parents Joe and Maria and I. At the time we were new to Rosenberg, but we knew we wanted to create a family business together. We came across a charming, repurposed gas station that was available in Downtown Rosenberg and saw an opportunity to turn it into something special.
The original concept was actually a New Orleans-style snowball shop. When summer ended, we realized we needed to pivot for the cooler months, so we started leaning more into the Tex-Mex dishes we grew up with, and that is really how the restaurant became what it is today. What started as a small family project quickly grew into a neighborhood spot where regulars would come in, enjoy a good meal, and feel at home.
This year, our business turns 35 years old, and it is still very much about family, community, and the relationships we have built with our customers.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
There are always opportunities to learn and grow in any career, and running a family business has certainly been no different for us. One thing that really helped along the way is that each of us brought different strengths to the table. My dad was a natural people person who could connect with anyone and build relationships with customers right away. My mom was incredibly hardworking and had strong business acumen. She made sure everything was done the right way for our customers, handled a lot of the work with our vendors and purchasing, and even a handful of the recipes on the menu are hers.
I had just graduated from Texas A&M when we started the business, so I was able to help bridge the two and bring in some fresh ideas. I also had the passion of working alongside my parents and a real determination to make sure we kept the business moving forward.
Over the years, another key has been our ability to adapt and lean in as things changed. When we first opened, we were a cash-only business. Today, we accept credit cards, offer online ordering, work with delivery platforms like DoorDash, and use social media to stay connected with our customers. Those kinds of changes helped us continue operating during difficult times like the pandemic, along with the incredible support from our community. Technology has helped us grow, but the personal connection with our customers will always be the most important part of what we do.
As you know, we’re big fans of Bob’s Taco Station. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
Bob’s Taco Station is a family-run, casual dine-in restaurant that serves breakfast and lunch all day. We specialize in home-style Tex-Mex cooking and are especially known for our fresh tortillas, breakfast tacos, and homemade tamales.
We do our best to know our customers by name and build real relationships with them. Over time, many of our guests have become like extended family. And many of our staff members have been with us for several years, and that kind of loyalty means a lot to all of us.
The atmosphere is casual, personal, and very reflective of the community. A lot of what you see on the walls has been brought in by customers over the years, so it really tells the story of the people who have supported us.
If you haven’t been to our restaurant before, we hope you stop by. Our doors are open to everyone. I’m usually there most days and would love to meet you.
What matters most to you?
What means the most to us as a business is consistency, family, and serving our community. We take a lot of pride in making sure our food and service are dependable day in and day out, because our customers count on that. Being a family business is at the heart of everything we do, not just within our own family but with the team and customers who have become part of it over the years. We’re also incredibly grateful for the support of the Rosenberg community. Without the people who continue to walk through our doors and support us, we wouldn’t be here. We do our best to give back to the community whenever we have the opportunity, because we truly want to see our community and the people in it flourish.
