Today we’d like to introduce you to Frederick McDuffy.
Hi Frederick, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
Frederick LeRoyal McDuffy is an award-winning filmmaker, producer, and retired U.S. Army Senior Noncommissioned Officer whose storytelling blends authenticity, humor, and heart. A native of Jonesboro, Arkansas, Frederick’s journey from military service to the world of film is a testament to resilience, reinvention, and purpose.
During his distinguished Army career, he served as the Noncommissioned Officer in Charge of Army Entertainment from 2013 to 2016, where he helped produce large-scale programs such as Operation Rising Star, The U.S. Army Soldier Show, and the Concert Series. His creative instincts also led him in front of the camera as the co-host of Armed Forces Trivia Quest, merging leadership with performance.
Following his retirement in 2022, Frederick pursued his lifelong passion for storytelling, earning his Bachelor of Science in Digital Filmmaking from The Los Angeles Film School. Immersed in every aspect of the craft, he has since produced a short film, two short documentaries, and a comedy skit series. His work reflects a deep commitment to truth, laughter, and human connection—values shaped by his years of service and his dedication to family.
Now based in Katy, Texas, Frederick continues to create films that explore identity, perseverance, and the beauty of second chances. When he’s not on set, he’s mentoring youth, networking with fellow creatives, or enjoying life with his wife, four daughters, and two granddaughters
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
It’s been good so far. I have faced some rejections, but they ultimately lead me into another direction that I was still able to thrive. The biggest hurdle is getting funding for film projects. I have 200 million dollar budget dreams, but a micro-budget reality.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I’m a filmmaker who loves to create and bring people’s stories to life on screen. I have produced one narrative short film called “Strong friend” and two short documentaries, one if which won a film festival award. I recently helped produce a film sprint in Montana where we shot 7 short films in 7 days(1 film per day). The project was called “Project Firebreak”. I also Assistant Directed 2 of the films and was the B-Cam operator on all 7 films. What i’m most proud of is my networking ability and being able to give less experienced people an opportunity to showcase their talent on and the behind the screen.
I think what sets me apart from others is my deep self belief that i can accomplish anything I set my mind to. I beleive God has a plan for me and that nothing can stop it.
What are your plans for the future?
I plan to continue to collaborate with other filmmakers and make short films and feature films. I also plan to work with some major studios to get more experience with large-scale projects.
