Today we’d like to introduce you to Carmela Morales.
Hi Carmela, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I’m a small-town country girl at heart, and from as early as I can remember, I’ve always wanted more out of life. Not in a vague way, I’ve always had a real drive to build something for myself, to create opportunities, and to see how far I could go. That entrepreneurial spirit has been with me from the beginning.
That mindset is what led me to the city of hopes and dreams, Los Angeles, where my career in HR really began. And honestly, I like to tell people, I didn’t find HR, HR found me. It wasn’t something I planned; it happened somewhat by accident. But I’m genuinely grateful it did.
I started out in a consulting role, focused on one function and just learning the work, trying to do it well. But it didn’t take long for me to realize I actually enjoyed it. More importantly, I started noticing patterns, gaps in how organizations were operating, blind spots in decision-making, and the real impact those things had on people. Working across law firms, real estate agencies, hospitality groups, and professional services organizations gave me a broad lens early on, and no matter the environment, the same themes kept showing up, people issues were always at the center.
From there, I made the decision to go internal, and that’s when my career really started to take shape. I relocated to Washington, DC, and had the opportunity to partner with some amazing organizations, where I deepened my experience and continued building across all areas of HR.
After gaining that experience, I officially stepped back into consulting in 2018 and built my firm, People Hour HR Consulting.
Over the past 15 years, I’ve done the full spectrum of HR work, and today, I intentionally lean into the areas where I make the biggest impact, employee relations, performance management, and compensation. I partner with organizations to build and strengthen their HR infrastructure, identify blind spots, and navigate complex people situations. At my core, I help organizations and leaders operate with clarity, accountability, and intention, while staying grounded in the human side of the work.
And as I look ahead, I’m focused on continuing to support organizations in building out their HR infrastructure, while also creating space for other HR professionals to connect, develop, and navigate this work with more clarity and confidence.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It definitely hasn’t been a smooth road, and I think that’s true for most people, whether they say it out loud or not. There were a lot of moments early on where I was figuring things out in real time, stepping into situations that didn’t always have clear answers, especially in employee relations and high-impact people decisions. That kind of work builds you, but it also stretches you.
I’ve also had to navigate environments where HR wasn’t always seen as a strategic partner. Learning how to influence, how to push back professionally, and how to stand firm in my recommendations, those were skills I had to develop over time.
And then stepping into consulting, especially building my own firm – that came with a different set of challenges. You’re not just doing the work, you’re building something from the ground up. That requires a different level of discipline, confidence, and resilience. But I’ll say this, every challenge sharpened how I show up today. It strengthened my judgment, my ability to navigate complexity, and my confidence in the value I bring.
So no, it hasn’t been smooth, but it’s been intentional, and it’s absolutely been worth it.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
At People Hour HR Consulting, we are a modern people strategy and HR advisory firm focused on helping organizations build, strengthen, and elevate their HR infrastructure. We’re your human resources, made smarter. We support organizations across the full spectrum of HR, from foundational structure to day-to-day execution. While I personally specialize in employee relations, performance management, and compensation, our firm is designed to meet organizations wherever they are, whether they need strategic guidance, hands-on support, or both.
Our work spans project-based strategy, advisory, training and development, and on-demand HR support. One of the things that truly sets us apart is our HR help desk model, which gives our clients real-time access to practical, responsive guidance. Whether it’s navigating day-to-day employee matters, addressing compliance questions, or working through complex situations as they arise, we’re there as a true partner, not just a resource you check in with occasionally. What we’re known for is our ability to bring clarity to complexity. We don’t take a one-size-fits-all approach, every organization is different, and our work reflects that. We’re thoughtful, direct, and solutions-oriented, and we operate at the intersection of business and people, helping leaders make informed, confident decisions.
Brand-wise, what I’m most proud of is the trust we’ve built. Organizations bring us into sensitive, high-stakes situations and rely on us not just for expertise, but for sound judgment and a steady, grounded approach. That trust is the foundation of everything we do. At the end of the day, our goal is to help organizations operate more effectively by putting structure, strategy, and intention behind their people practices, while still keeping the human side of the work front and center.
How do you think about happiness?
What makes me happy is seeing things come together, whether that’s in business, in people, or in life.
I genuinely enjoy building, building structure where there wasn’t any, helping organizations get to a place where things feel clear and aligned, and seeing leaders grow in how they show up and make decisions. There’s something really fulfilling about taking something that feels complex or uncertain and bringing clarity to it.
I also find a lot of fulfillment in knowing that the work I do has a real impact on people’s day-to-day experience at work. People are spending 40-plus hours a week there, so it matters to me that organizations are operating better, and that people can actually feel the difference.
And at the center of all of that is people. I’m energized by connection, building relationships, creating trust, and being in community with others. I really believe we’re meant to operate in community, and that shows up in how I work and how I move through the world. Whether it’s with clients, colleagues, or friends, that ability to connect with people and build real relationships is something I genuinely value.
Outside of work, I really value balance. I’m driven, but I also make space to enjoy life. I spend time with my family, I travel, I enjoy good food, and sometimes I do absolutely nothing, and I need those days. My mind is always moving, so that time to reset is important.
At a high level, what makes me happy is progress. Seeing things move forward, whether in my own life or in the work I do with others, and knowing I played a role in that, that’s what keeps me grounded and motivated.
