Today we’d like to introduce you to Denny Murphy.
Hi Denny, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
A good friend of mine who works in the permanent make up industry brought scalp micropigmentation to my attention. She knew that I was struggling with hair loss and she was aware of all my attempts to cover it up. After looking into different SMP artists I decided to go ahead and give it a try – BEST decision ever! I was very pleased with my results and I could now throw away all those products I was using to cover up my hair loss, it was a whole production that I was happy to let go off lol.
SMP is very no non sense and natural looking. I was so pleased with my results that I thought “You know what, I would be good at this!” I’ve always been an artist by nature and I was always that friend that if you needed an emergency hair cut before a night out I was your guy. Even when I had my full head of thick hair I would always cut it on my own and line up my own facial hair. With that experience of grooming and my artistic sense, it made SMP that much more easier for me as it encompassed many of my talents.
I decided to go ahead with the training and certification and even decided to do a 1 year apprenticeship as well. Once my apprenticeship ended, it was full steam ahead and I relocated and decided to open up my business in Houston, Texas. I have been in business since 2020 and am very grateful of my many amazing clients that support me. I am also very thankful that I get to practice my craft on a daily basis which results in me getting better and better as an artist everyday.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Everyone knows the life of the freelance artist, you may have some months that are better than others. During any down time its always good to work on marketing and to work on improvements. As a small business owner the start up can sometimes be challenging and the expenses can add up quick. Permits, overhead and all the extra can sometimes put a damper on things but in the end it is well worth it if you believe in yourself.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I love to help people that struggle with hair loss as I did. Its a good feeling to watch people transform and gain their confidence back throughout the process. I handle each client as an individual and pride myself on handling each client with care. I enjoy building bonds and getting to know my clients, sometimes it seems that not only am I an artist but sometimes Im the therapist as well lol. I pride myself in doing the best job that I can and to make sure all my customers are satisfied with their results.
Can you talk to us a bit about happiness and what makes you happy?
It makes me happy to help people with SMP as smp has helped me. I am very thankful that I’m able to do what I love and make a living of it as well. Its very satisfying to own an independent business and have the freedom to run things how I want them to be run.
