Today we’d like to introduce you to Jovanna Aguilar.
Hi Jovanna, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
As a first-generation Mexican-American woman, I’ve always been determined to build a name that reflects where I come from—one that celebrates my heritage, amplifies Latina voices, and stays grounded in my origins. Driven to achieve the opportunities my parents never had, their sacrifices paved the way for me to graduate high school, attend university, and earn a Bachelor’s degree in Mass Communication. Today, I’m proud to be living my dream as a reporter for Community Impact, a local newspaper that reflects my values, where I use my voice to uplift and amplify the voices of others through my work.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
As a DACA recipient and Houston native since the age of one, I grew up rooted in a place I’ve always called home, yet never fully allowed to belong. I grew up like any other kid—going to school, forming dreams, and finding my place in my community—but with a quiet, constant uncertainty, knowing that no matter how much I contributed, my place here could still be taken away. Although these struggles continue, I know I am not alone in this journey and I have God, my family and community to lean on. Despite these struggles I believe that with enough courage anyone can accomplish the ‘impossible’ and our place in the world can never really be taken away.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I joined Community Impact as a Local Business reporter in July 2023. As a local business reporter, I cover the North Houston area and have the opportunity to interview local business owners regularly. Through my work, I provide entrepreneurs with a platform to share their stories while giving readers a deeper connection to the people behind the businesses in their community. As a reporter for a widely distributed local newspaper, I am committed to delivering accurate, trustworthy, and unbiased information, highlighting the stories that matter most. While setting aside personal beliefs can be challenging, I’ve embraced the responsibility of unbiased reporting—ensuring every story is covered with balance, integrity, and respect for all perspectives.
