Today we’d like to introduce you to Elizabeth Hewatt.
Hi Elizabeth, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Our story was forever changed when our oldest daughter regressed into Autism just before her second birthday. One day she was an exuberant toddler running around the house. The next she stopped making eye contact and speaking. Scarier still, she started biting herself and was constantly crying. Today, my daughter is a 26-year-old woman who is still severely autistic. She is non-verbal but communicates utilizing an AAC device. She has a variety of medical conditions that lead to a very limited life. Unfortunately, when she was a child services and help was not widespread, as it is today. I have spent over 20 years educating myself and doing everything I can to make sure that my daughter has the best possible life, despite her challenges. I received a master’s degree in Autism and ABA to learn as much as I could to help my own daughter. In the end, I discovered a career that I love. I have spent the past decade working with so many families that have their own story of how Autism changed their lives. I am passionate about helping children and parents, so that each child can be as successful and happy as possible. I have learned so much from raising my children and from each family I have encountered.
Changing Stories Autism Services and Consultation was born from a desire to continue to support families by helping them to meet the needs of their child impacted by Autism. Whenever I work with a child or parent, I always consider what would I want for my own child. I believe in simple solutions that make big impacts. I realize each family is individual and wants to create their own family story, I am just there to help them. I can bring the knowledge of a professional with the experience of a parent. I have spent 20 years learning how to manage all the behaviors I encounter at work, in my own home. My goal is to utilize my education and experience to bring effective change and hope to the many families around me coping with their own struggles.
Today, we are a clinic that provide services to Autistic children in south Harris and Galveston county.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
We started out providing therapy in home and at the beginning of 2025 opened a clinical building. Moving to a clinical location was a hard jump in the beginning.
