Hi Amanda, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I launched my accounting and fractional CFO firm, Sensible Strategies Consulting in late 2024 with a goal of becoming the community “go-to” guide for small businesses owners. My tag line is “we guide businesses from launch to success”! The typical scenario is that an owner “knows” his business well, but unless he is in the accounting or finance business, he doesn’t really understand his finances. This causes more failures than anything else. So we seek to educate and to support small business owners with everything from basic bookkeeping, to business launch services, to CFO services like budgeting and cash flow forecasting and everything in between. We recently added our “educational” workshop series entitled “Pathway to Prosperity: Financial Strategies for Business Success”. Session 1 was completed in April, and Session 2 is coming up in June. Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
New business launches are seldom smooth. And I can use my own experience to help others. My particular business launch did not require a large upfront investment, but there were revenue projections that did not happen in the first year as expected. So I had to shift things a little. Then suddenly at the end of 2025, all the networking and outreach bore fruit and the business was doubling almost every month. This huge explosion in 2025 Q4 and 2026 Q1 had me working some extra long hours until I could build up my staff and get everyone trained. These are just one type of struggle that a new business might face. Cash flow is often the biggest hurdle. I am speaking at a Business Design Workshop in The Woodlands on June16 (www.thefounderlife.com) and will discuss the 5 non-negotiable things a new business must prepare early in a launch. One of those is to have 24-36 months of operating expenses ready, which is what we call a cash runway.
As you know, we’re big fans of Sensible Strategies Consulting. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
We set ourselves apart from other Bookkeeping firms or Accounting firms in that we offer a much higher level of services. In fact, we have corporate level experience in Finance and accounting, and bring those down to an affordable level for small businesses. This is our commitment to supporting the local small business community. Most fractional CFO or Controller services would entail hiring full time employees starting around $300 – $350k per year plus benefits. We offer these same services on an hourly or monthly fee basis that is quite respectful of a small growing business. This is our “give-back” to the community and we are proud to support small businesses just like ourselves as we feel we are the backbone of the American economy and a big part of the “American dream”. We want to help others succeed.
Is there anyone you’d like to thank or give credit to?
I have had a huge amount of support from my family both in terms of encouragement and literal technical support. My sister, Sandra McClendon, is my biggest cheerleader and advocate, and she has learned social media, and marketing skills to help me in that area. Her help has been invaluable! The firm now has a pretty good presence on LinkedIn, Google and Facebook with Instagram coming next. She designed my logo, and all my marketing materials and presentations for the teaching workshop, and brings her artsy style to my rather plain accounting POV! LOL!
