Today we’d like to introduce you to Kirby Mycal.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
Two years ago, I willingly began my personal growth journey. I have always been a pretty confident person, but I lacked boundaries not just in relationships but friendships too. Through my self growth journey (which btw I think is a never ending one) I realized the lack of boundaries I had with others stemmed from the lack of boundaries had with myself. I began to pour into those and things which poured into me, truly. I did nothing and had no one around me that didn’t make me feel good. As time passed I began to look back at all these beautiful memories and surrounding me were people who loved me for me; the loud and fabulous woman who believed she could have anything she wanted and less was not even an option. I cultivated a life so peaceful that outside noise, even though it was still there, didn’t matter anymore. I began to share my life with social media to show others and myself, that you don’t have to wait to have fun- you can live your life unapologetically and enjoy it in it’s entirety now.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Definitely not, in the beginning of my journey I would post content that was me but wasn’t ME me. I went to the gym and ate well so I would post that type of content, but that was only one part of my journey, it was so much deeper than that….I cultivated a strong sisterhood, I moved back in with family and grew my relationship with my parents, I had fun, I went out, I traveled, I stopped dating men and started dating myself…and I loved it. However, on a frequent occasion, my girls would be my date for the night (2 yays for GNO). They are a huge part of my story, coming from someone who to be very vulnerable, revolved her life around her relationship more than once, sisterhood has shown me that love comes in all forms, and having friends that not only pour into themselves but pour into you is a blessing that I will count forever. I focused my life around me and what felt right to my heart, I began to love myself. So I started posting content that represented all of me and it began to flourish, gaining millions of views. Over the past 90 days, I have had over 26 million views across Instagram alone.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
My handle is @kirbymycal – Kirby is my first name, Mycal (prounounced Mikkel) is my middle name. Growing up a minority and more broadly speaking on the Northside of Houston, there is not much to look up to, not much encouragement to “dream big”. Getting married, having children and working until you retire is the norm around here. That’s not my dream. I create lifestyle content as a documentary and declaration to all. No matter where you are in life, no matter the circumstances. Have fun, be crazy, be yourself, be young, be hot, be happy, be selfish, be passionate, do whatever the hell you want to do! The world is our oyster.
Are there any important lessons you’ve learned that you can share with us?
We truly do learn from our mistakes. Never settle. Nothing is out of your reach. Things unfold exactly as they should at the right time, always. Have people around you that inspire you. Clap for yourself.
