Today we’d like to introduce you to Harry Maurer.
Hi Harry, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I’ve been enjoying magic and that passion has allowed me to travel around d the world entertaining audiences on cruise ships, in casino shows , at corporate events and more.
I’ve been fascinated by magic and live entertainment since I was 5 years old when I first learned a simple magic trick taught to me by my grandfather. What originally drew me in was the sense of fun, wonder, and connection it created between people. Over time, that interest grew into performing professionally, and eventually into producing full-scale live entertainment experiences.
Over the years, I’ve had the opportunity to perform in a wide variety of venues, including theaters, casino showrooms, corporate events, and cruise ships around the world. Those experiences taught me not only how to entertain an audience, but how to create an entire evening that people genuinely remember.
As live entertainment changed, especially after the pandemic, I began focusing on producing recurring shows in local venues throughout the Houston and Conroe area. I saw an opportunity to help restaurants, theaters, and resorts create something unique that would bring people together while also helping the venues attract new customers on nights that might otherwise be slow.
That idea eventually grew into the shows and productions I create today with my production company MagicNight Productions, including dinner theater experiences and touring “Evenings of Magic” featuring award-winning entertainers from across the country. Our national performers have appeared on television, in Las Vegas, on cruise ships, and in major venues nationwide.
What I enjoy most is that the shows feel personal. Even in larger rooms, there’s a level of audience interaction and shared experience that you can’t replicate through streaming or social media. People come out to laugh, reconnect, celebrate, and experience something live together. Watching audiences return month after month, often bringing friends with them, has probably been the most rewarding part of the journey.
At this point, I see myself not just as a magician, but as someone focused on creating memorable experiences and helping keep live entertainment thriving in local communities.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Not at all. Like most people in entertainment and small business, there have been a lot of ups and downs along the way.
One of the biggest challenges has been balancing the creative side of entertainment with the business side. People see the performance on stage, but they don’t always realize how much work goes into producing a successful live event. There’s marketing, ticketing, venue coordination, sound, lighting, staffing, scheduling, and constantly adapting to what audiences are looking for.
The live entertainment industry also changed dramatically over the past several years. After the pandemic, many venues were struggling, audiences had different habits, and people had become used to staying home. At the same time, restaurants and theaters were hurting and looking for new ways to bring people in. That forced me to think differently and become more creative, not only as a performer, but as a producer.
One challenge was convincing venues that live entertainment could work on a consistent basis, especially recurring monthly shows. Fortunately, once audiences experienced the events, word of mouth started growing quickly, and we consistently found that 60% of our audiences were first-time visitors to the venues, which helped demonstrate the value of creating these kinds of experiences.
Another challenge is that live entertainment is never static. Every audience is different, every venue is different, and you are constantly refining things behind the scenes to improve the experience. Even after years of performing, I still approach every show with the mindset that there’s always something to learn and improve.
At the end of the day, though, the challenges are also part of what makes it rewarding. There’s something special about seeing a room full of people laughing, interacting, and experiencing amazing magic together in real time. That’s what keeps me passionate about it.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I create and produce live comedy and magic entertainment experiences for theaters, restaurants, resorts, corporate events, and special venues throughout the Houston area and beyond. While I still perform regularly myself, a large part of what I do today involves producing complete evenings of entertainment that bring audiences together in a way that feels interactive, personal, and memorable.
As a comedy magician, my shows combine comedy, audience participation, and illusion in a format designed to feel sophisticated but approachable. I’ve always believed that the strongest magic isn’t just about fooling people, it’s about creating moments of surprise, laughter, and connection that audiences continue talking about afterward.
Over the years, I’ve had the opportunity to entertain in casino showrooms in Las Vegas, Reno, Laughlin, Biloxi, and in more than half of the casino showrooms in Atlantic City, where I was nominated for the prestigious “Atlantic City Entertainer of the Year” award. I’ve also performed for corporate events, theaters, cruise lines, and audiences in a wide variety of venues around the country and internationally. Those experiences helped shape both my performing style and my understanding of what makes live entertainment truly memorable.
In addition to my own performances, I also produce recurring “Evenings of Magic” featuring award-winning entertainers from around the country, including performers seen on television, in casino showrooms, theaters, and on major cruise lines. I handle many aspects of the production process myself, including venue partnerships, promotion, ticketing, sound, lighting, and overall audience experience. I enjoy building shows that feel polished and high-end while still maintaining an intimate atmosphere.
One thing I’m especially proud of is helping local venues create successful entertainment nights that introduce new people to their businesses. In several venues we’ve worked with, a large percentage of attendees were first-time visitors. Watching audiences return month after month, often bringing friends and family with them, has been incredibly rewarding.
How do you think about happiness?
What makes me happiest is creating experiences that genuinely bring people together. There’s something special about watching an audience walk into a room as strangers, then leave laughing, talking, and sharing memories together a couple of hours later.
Live entertainment has a unique energy that you can’t fully duplicate anywhere else. In a world where so much interaction happens through screens, I love creating moments where people are fully present, engaged, and experiencing something together in real time. When you hear a room erupt in laughter, see people completely amazed, or watch audience members continue talking long after the show ends, it reminds you how important those shared experiences really are.
I also genuinely enjoy the creative process behind producing shows. I love taking an idea and turning it into a full evening that people look forward to attending. Whether it’s designing the flow of a performance, bringing guest entertainers together, or helping a venue create a successful event night, there’s a lot of satisfaction in building something that creates excitement and connection within a community.
Another thing that makes me happy is seeing repeat audiences return month after month and bring new friends with them. That tells me the experience meant something to them beyond just a night out. Knowing that people made memories together because of something I helped create is probably the most rewarding part of what I do.
