Meet Nereira Mendoza of Houston

Today we’d like to introduce you to Nereira Mendoza.

Hi Nereira, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
My journey began while majoring in child psychology, driven by a deep interest in human connection, development, and personal growth. However, the true spark for my business came from home. Seeing my son’s deep passion for art—and realizing there were very few options for creative kids in our area—I put my ideas together to fill that gap. I founded The Art Studio by NM in South Texas to build a safe, inspiring, and creative space. Today, I proudly blend my background with my love for education to design enriching art programs for children in our community.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
It definitely hasn’t been a smooth road. Starting a children’s art studio was not common in our area, which brought a lot of uncertainty. I moved forward with many doubts, but I kept pushing to bring my ideas to life, always trying to stay positive. No matter how nervous I felt on the inside, I had to learn to balance my life as a spouse, a mother of three, and an entrepreneur transitioning from a secure 9-to-5 job to full-time business ownership. Stepping into the unknown was terrifying, but overcoming those doubts and finding that balance has been the most rewarding part of the journey.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
At The Art Studio by NM, we specialize in high-quality, process-based art education for children, blending classic art history with creative freedom. I have always had a deep, natural interest in child development, human connection, and personal growth, and I use that insight to ensure our studio focuses heavily on the emotional benefits of creativity. We want every child to feel seen, confident, and supported.

We are known for our engaging, specialized curriculum—introducing students to master artists like Matisse, Van Gogh, and Kusama—and for hosting vibrant student art exhibitions, creative art camps, and unforgettable birthday parties, alongside our unique studio gift shop. What truly sets us apart is our intentional focus on a child’s inner well-being alongside fine arts, creating a nurturing space where self-expression and emotional growth go hand-in-hand.

What I am most proud of is establishing a safe, nurturing, and creative environment from scratch, bringing completely new opportunities to the children in our area Transforming my initial ideas into a thriving community space that directly serves local families—while balancing my role as a mother of three—is my greatest achievement.

If you had to, what characteristic of yours would you give the most credit to?
The characteristic most important to my success is determination. I am a very determined person; when an idea comes to my mind, my vivid and creative imagination takes over, and I can’t rest until I make that vision come to life. Something inside told me I had to push through the doubts because this was a passion I knew I would genuinely enjoy doing every single day. Beyond that, I kept thinking about how many other moms out there were searching for a safe, supportive place for their own children. Knowing I could fill that need for other families is what motivated me to keep going, no matter how nervous I was.
