Rising Stars: Meet Jake Allen of Houston

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jake Allen.

Hi Jake , thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
This could take a long time! ha To spare anyone who’s on a tight time table, I’ll do my best to get through it in enough detail, yet without being superfluous.
Left of West started in 2022. We’ve had members come and go, but as of 2024, we’ve established our current lineup. However, this project started probably almost 10 years ago, but with frequent start and stops, you know, the inevitabilities of life. Originally, this was a passion project of Jake’s when he left Houston’s Square and Compass. He grew up on a plethora of genres, but he really wanted to touch up on old 90s alternative, and 90’s/2000’s emo (not the mall emo, and not the D.C). With inspirations from Nada Surf, Mineral, The Promise Ring, Braid, Gin Blossoms, The Spinanes, Rainer Maria… just to name a few, but the list can go on. Drawing from the likes of such acts, Left of West has honed their sound but has continued to grow in ways yet unseen!

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Never a smooth road! Mainly, it would come down to people’s personal struggles and differences, whether it would be political, social, or musical. The lack of communication would fester until something popped, and by then, it would be too late. Communication is key in any relationship, especially a band with multiple partners! Without it, it won’t work.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
All of our members come from different fields, teacher, health insurance broker, nanny, drummer/promoter/style consultant, wine management and service industries. Nothing we do on the side of our lives sets us a part from any other act. We’re all just humans living in this world trying to find a means to an end so we can live as comfortable as possible.

Is there anything else you’d like to share with our readers?
Busch Beer is glue for the band.
