Meet Kiara West of Houston

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kiara West.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
The Wandering Board began from a simple love for bringing people together through food, creativity, and meaningful experiences. My husband, McKinnley, and I started the business wanting to create something that felt interactive, elevated, and memorable, not just another catering service, but an experience people would genuinely enjoy and remember. What started with a charcuterie bar and grazing setups quickly grew into something much bigger as we realized how much people loved interactive food experiences and the connection they naturally created at events.

Outside of business, I’m also a Labor & Delivery nurse with over 12 years of experience. Nursing has played such a huge role in shaping how we operate our business. Caring for people, attention to detail, professionalism, and creating a safe environment are things that naturally carried over into The Wandering Board. Sanitation and food safety are extremely important to us. We take pride in maintaining clean setups, proper food storage and temperature control, and ensuring every event is handled with the same level of care and attention I bring into healthcare.

As our business has grown, so has our creativity. Today, we’ve expanded far beyond charcuterie and now offer interactive mini waffle and pancake bars, parfait bars, taco bars, brunch bars, snack carts, and most recently, our new ice cream bar. We love creating fully customizable experiences where guests can build exactly what they want while enjoying a fun, elevated atmosphere.

What’s been most exciting is watching The Wandering Board grow into something the community truly connects with. We are now booking weddings, school events, bridal showers, birthday parties, women’s empowerment events, networking mixers, corporate events, and community celebrations throughout the Greater Houston area. Every event is unique, and we love being able to customize our carts, menus, signage, and setups to match each client’s vision.

At the heart of it all, our mission remains the same: creating experiences that bring people together. We want guests to feel welcomed, celebrated, and cared for from the moment they walk up to our cart. Watching something that started as a passion grow into a thriving business has been incredibly rewarding, and we’re excited to continue expanding, creating, and serving our community in meaningful ways.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
No, it definitely has not been a smooth road, but it has been a road full of learning experiences that have shaped who we are today, both personally and professionally. Building The Wandering Board from the ground up while balancing careers, family, and everyday life has come with many obstacles and challenges along the way.

One of the biggest challenges early on was helping people fully understand exactly what we do, what our services provide, and the value behind the experience we create. Because our business is very interactive and customizable, we often found ourselves educating clients on the difference between simply purchasing food versus investing in a fully styled, all-inclusive experience that includes setup, serving, customization, replenishment, breakdown, and attention to detail. Pricing was another learning curve. Learning how to properly price our services while still honoring the time, preparation, quality ingredients, creativity, and labor that go into every event.

Navigating being new business owners was also a huge adjustment. There’s so much behind the scenes that people don’t always see; marketing, branding, bookkeeping, networking, contracts, social media, customer service, scheduling, shopping, food prep, and event logistics. We were constantly learning, adapting, and figuring things out as we went. There were definitely moments of self-doubt and exhaustion, especially balancing entrepreneurship with my career as a Labor & Delivery nurse and family life at home.

Another major learning experience was understanding our audience and discovering who truly connected with our brand. Over time, we learned the importance of creating experiences rather than simply offering products. Once we began leaning more into storytelling, intentional branding, elevated presentation, and interactive experiences, we saw people connect with The Wandering Board on a much deeper level.

As our business evolved, we also realized the importance of continuing to grow creatively and expand our services beyond traditional charcuterie. That led us to introduce more interactive bar experiences such as mini waffle and pancake bars, parfait bars, taco bars, brunch bars, snack carts, and most recently our ice cream bar. We noticed guests loved being able to customize exactly what they wanted, and those interactive experiences naturally brought people together in such a fun and memorable way. Expanding our menu and services helped us better serve a wider variety of events while continuing to stand out creatively.

Although the journey hasn’t been easy, every challenge taught us something valuable. It strengthened our communication, creativity, resilience, and faith. Looking back now, we’re grateful for every obstacle because those experiences helped shape the business, service, and vision we have today.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
The Wandering Board is a luxury mobile grazing and interactive food experience business serving the Greater Houston area and surrounding cities. We specialize in creating elevated, fully customizable food experiences that bring people together in a fun, memorable, and interactive way.

What makes our business unique is that we are fully mobile and all-inclusive. We don’t simply drop off food. We provide the full experience from setup and styling to serving, replenishing, and breakdown. Every event is customized to match our client’s vision, theme, colors, and atmosphere. From custom signage and personalized labels to interactive toppings and beautifully curated setups, we focus heavily on the details and guest experience.

One thing we’re especially known for is creating experiences that feel intentional, interactive, and visually elevated while still feeling warm and welcoming. We love giving guests the opportunity to build exactly what they want, whether it’s customizing a charcuterie cup, creating the perfect waffle combination, or building their own brunch box. We’ve found that those interactive moments naturally create conversation, connection, and lasting memories among guests.

As a Labor & Delivery nurse, sanitation, cleanliness, food safety, and attention to detail are extremely important to me and play a huge role in how we operate our business. We take pride in maintaining clean, organized setups, proper food storage and temperature control, and ensuring every event is handled professionally and with care. That level of attentiveness and hospitality is something we truly value.

What we’re most proud of is the impact our business has had in bringing people together and becoming part of such meaningful moments in people’s lives. Whether it’s weddings, school events, birthday parties, women’s empowerment events, networking mixers, or community celebrations, it’s incredibly rewarding knowing people trust us to be part of their special moments. We’re also proud of how much we’ve grown creatively and professionally in such a short amount of time while remaining authentic to who we are.

What truly sets us apart is the heart behind our business. We are a husband-and-wife team who genuinely love serving people. We don’t just focus on food, we focus on creating experiences, meaningful connections, and moments guests will remember long after the event is over.

What would you say have been one of the most important lessons you’ve learned?
One of the most important lessons we’ve learned along this journey is that people connect more deeply with authenticity than perfection. Early on, we put a lot of pressure on ourselves to have everything figured out, but over time we realized that growth truly comes through learning, adapting, and simply showing up consistently with passion and purpose.

We’ve also learned the importance of creating experiences rather than just providing a service. Food brings people together, but it’s the intentional details, interaction, hospitality, and connection that truly leave a lasting impression. Once we shifted our mindset from simply selling products to creating meaningful moments, our business began to grow in ways we never imagined.

Another major lesson has been understanding the value of patience and perseverance. Building a business takes time, sacrifice, and resilience. There have been challenges, moments of exhaustion, and times we questioned ourselves, but every obstacle taught us something valuable and helped shape us into stronger business owners.

Most importantly, we’ve learned to trust the process and remain grounded in why we started; serving people with care, creativity, and heart. Staying true to who we are has been one of the biggest keys to our growth and success.
