Life & Work with Zaira Callis of Houston

Today we’d like to introduce you to Zaira Callis.

Hi Zaira, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I started photography during one of the hardest seasons of my life. What began as a creative outlet slowly turned into something that gave me purpose, confidence, and eventually a career I deeply love. I picked up a camera with no real expectations, just intention, and quickly fell in love with the ability to preserve emotion and tell stories in a way that felt honest and timeless.

Over the years, I taught myself everything through experience, trial and error, and a genuine passion for connecting with people. What started with small portrait sessions eventually grew into weddings and elopements, which became the heart of my work. I realized I wasn’t just taking photos, I was documenting some of the most meaningful moments in people’s lives.

Today, I’m based in Houston and have had the honor of photographing couples from all different backgrounds and walks of life. My work has taken me from capturing love stories locally to photographing internationally in one of my bucket-list destinations, Paris. My approach has always been rooted in emotion, intention, and creating an experience where people feel comfortable being fully themselves. Building this business has been one of the most rewarding journeys of my life, and I’m incredibly grateful for every client who has trusted me along the way.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Not at all. Building this business came with a lot of uncertainty, sacrifice, and learning curves. Like many creatives, I started without a roadmap or connections in the industry, so much of my journey was built through trial and error. There were seasons where I questioned myself constantly, struggled with burnout, balancing motherhood, and trying to navigate the pressure of turning something I loved into a sustainable business.

One of the biggest challenges was learning to believe in myself before others did. Photography is such a personal form of art, so putting your work out into the world can feel incredibly vulnerable. I also had to learn the business side of things on my own, from contracts and pricing to setting boundaries and understanding my value.

There were definitely moments that tested me, but those experiences shaped both me and my business in the best way. They taught me resilience, patience, and the importance of staying true to the kind of experience and work I want to create for my clients. Looking back now, I’m grateful for every difficult season because it made this journey feel that much more meaningful.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
My business focuses on wedding, elopement, and portrait photography with an emphasis on storytelling and genuine connection. While I photograph all kinds of celebrations, I’ve become especially known for documenting intimate weddings and courthouse elopements in a way that feels elevated, emotional, and true to each couple. I love taking moments that may seem simple on the surface and turning them into something deeply meaningful and visually timeless.

What I offer goes beyond just delivering photos. I guide my clients through the entire experience, from helping with timelines and locations to creating an environment where they feel comfortable enough to fully be themselves. A big part of my work is helping people slow down and actually enjoy their day rather than feeling pressured to perform for the camera.

I think what sets my brand apart is the balance between artistry and experience. My editing style is cinematic, timeless, and emotion-driven, but I also care deeply about how people feel while working with me. I want my clients to feel like they’re working with someone who genuinely cares about their story, not just another vendor checking a box.

One thing I’m especially proud of is that my brand has grown very organically through relationships and referrals. Most of my business comes from past clients sharing their experience with others, and that means a lot to me because trust is such a huge part of what I do. I also love that my work reflects all kinds of love stories and people from different backgrounds, cultures, and walks of life.

At the core of everything, I want my work to feel honest. Years from now, I want my clients to look back at their photos and remember exactly how that season of life felt.

Is there something surprising that you feel even people who know you might not know about?
One thing that might surprise people is that, despite how polished and calm everything may look now, I’m still constantly learning and evolving creatively behind the scenes. I think people sometimes assume photographers always have everything figured out, but I’m someone who is always pushing myself to grow, refine my craft, and create work that feels even more meaningful with every season.

Another thing people may not realize is how emotionally invested I become in the people I work with. I genuinely care about my clients and the stories they trust me to document. By the end of many weddings or sessions, it no longer feels like I’m working with strangers. I think that connection naturally reflects in my work and the experience I create.

A fun fact is that one of my biggest dreams as a photographer was to shoot in Paris, and I was able to make that happen. Coming from where I started, that moment felt incredibly surreal and reminded me how far this journey has taken me.
