Today we’d like to introduce you to Lillian Sturt.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I’m a self-taught portrait artist raised in the Brindabella Ranges on the edge of the Kosciuszko National Park, NSW Australia.
I have been working as a charcoal portrait artist for the last ten years but i also create original art and fine art prints through mixed media methods.
My signature style is realism, reflecting life as art, through portraits and detailed charcoal drawings; inspired by the world around me.
However, i have always had a great passion for capturing a deeper sense of the magic of life, through vivid colours and unique surreal designs.
Art has always been the major passion in my life. In the last year i have been experimenting with prints, postcards and cards, expanding to local and regional shops; winning local awards and diversifying my reach.
I think i got to a place in my life where i considered if not now when? Art has always been the only thing i felt truly called towards and i feel there is a deeper value to the experience we can share through art.
I think i have drawn so many eyes that i realised the thing looking back was the same in everyone. There is something beautiful about that. It is easy to miss the little things without art. I want to share the things that go unnoticed, the things left unsaid. We all have a story to tell. I aim to inspire us to share it.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
I think the key obstacle of every artist is being told that it isn’t a real job. It is not a job you can just apply for and the next day you are defined by the title artist, but in the same right anyone who paints is an artist in my opinion.
It is one of those things that takes a lot of courage to define yourself as, to really go for it a pursue your dreams. It is easy to let limiting beliefs shape your perception of what reality can be but at the end of the day we create the reality we want and i am really starting to lean into that.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
Im a self taught portrait artist that does families, children and pets in charcoal and other medias; but i have always loved to paint.
I like to capture the moments we don’t want to forget, there is so much meaning in a single memory, its easy to miss the little things without art.
I am most known for my portraiture and detailed charcoal drawing of significant local landmarks. However my core passion sits in capturing a sense of the unseen, the things that go unnoticed, unspoken yet resonate with us all. Im starting to lean more into the surreal and merging a sense of realism was the magic of experience.
Who else deserves credit in your story?
I have been very fortunate to have the support if my family in pursuing art as a full time Carrer. I have also been very privileged to have the support of local businesses such as Plane Tree Gallery and Katopra printing in Tumut NSW, who have helped mentor me through the process of recreating art through print media. I’ve had the support of the Tumut Art Society as well in showcasing my work, where i have one local awards and commandments. Business in built through community and i feel in any story of success support and community sit at a fundamental level.
