Check Out Kenya’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kenya.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
During a collegiate winter break, my brother, uncle, best friend, and I found ourselves in a room discussing how to maximize and leverage our creativity. Each of us was actively creating – whether through music or art – and we knew the traditional corporate path wasn’t our default.

In 2012, we officially came together under the name The People Party. As we began networking, we learned that The People’s Party II was also the name of the Houston Black Panther Party, which led us to rebrand and establish our own distinct identity as PPL PXRTY.

In 2014, we hosted our first music and artist showcase. Since then, we’ve continued to build intentional creative spaces where performers, vendors, and entrepreneurs can collaborate and thrive under one roof – empowering hundreds of creators and counting.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
This journey has been anything but smooth. I’ve navigated difficult conversations with my parents, who struggled to understand why I chose not to follow a traditional corporate path, and I’ve lost friendships with people who simply weren’t aligned with the vision. Along the way, I’ve been asked more than once why I would “waste” my marketing degree from Texas A&M.

But exploring and expressing my creativity was never optional; it was necessary for me to feel fulfilled and aligned with my purpose. Through both wins and losses, I’m grateful for the courage it took to step out in faith and gain hands-on entrepreneurial experience. My friend and I often say those first six years felt like earning a real-life MBA in entrepreneurship.

Even with that growth, there are still moments when I question whether I’m where I’m “supposed to be.” While I eventually stepped into the corporate world, it hasn’t taken away from my journey. It’s actually strengthened it. It’s allowed me to elevate the level of investment I can make into my events and creative projects. More than anything, it’s taught me that timing matters, and everything will come together exactly as it’s meant to.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I consider myself an all-around artist- and while that can sometimes feel frustrating, it’s ultimately what sets me apart. Creating across disciplines isn’t a limitation; it’s the foundation of everything I build.

The spaces we curate are just as much platforms for others as they are for us. As a visual artist transitioning from pencil to oil painting, a music artist evolving from secular to Christian rap, a creative entrepreneur building intentional spaces, and a fashion enthusiast working toward my own brand, I’ve designed opportunities that allow all of those passions to coexist.

I’ve co-founded PPL PXRTY Weekend- a three-day experience bringing together multiple creative expressions- and developed a fashion and art show that allows me to showcase my music, artwork, and designs in one space, while also creating opportunities for other designers, artists, and local vendors to shine alongside me.

This structure allows me to focus on two major event campaigns each year- one in the summer and one in the winter. With our upcoming summer series taking place July 10–12, my goal is to solidify PPL PXRTY Weekend as a staple creative event in Houston, while also releasing a new single and visual as I continue to establish myself in the Christian rap and R&B space. This year, we brought on AJ McQueen as the headlining artist for our signature event, RockIt Fest, and welcomed Richdanfamous as a special guest at our Christian Rap & R&B Brunch experience.

Can you talk to us a bit about happiness and what makes you happy?
I’m happiest when I’m creating- truly in the process. Whether it’s painting a portrait, writing or recording a song, or even brainstorming and designing flyers for my events, it all feels natural to me. It doesn’t feel like work; it feels like a challenge I enjoy and something that continuously fuels me.

As a mother of three, I also find so much joy in pouring into my children- both spiritually and creatively. I give them the space to express themselves freely and authentically so I can nurture their gifts and guide them along their individual paths. Honestly, some of my happiest moments are the simplest- taking them to the park, going out to eat, and just watching them experience and enjoy their lives.
