Today we’d like to introduce you to Crystal Duval.
Hi Crystal, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
Growing up in the 70’s, music was always in the background of every day life. My mom had a record player and an extensive record collection. I always knew every word and every artist who sang the song, so much so that it became a game later in life where I would ask anyone- do you know who sings this song? Music always got me through every aspect of my life. Professionally I went to school to become a nurse and have been one for almost 31 years. Through the power of social media, I became friends with an artist and then that led to an RNB Cypher that we attended at The Lair Studio that was put on by Music in the City HTX. I still remember when I walked in, they said ” there she is!” It is almost like our paths were destined to cross. Kael ( who owns the studio) started asking me to different events, and from there I just naturally started networking with other artists and creatives. Since my personality makes people feel comfortable that people naturally gravitate towards me. Kael then asked if I would be station manager of Music in the City HTX and do weekly news pieces during our interviews. I have met some incredible people with talent that blows roofs off of buildings. It has also led to me to judging artist competions, to having an artist development coach come from Canada to studio in June, and now this wonderful opportunity with Voyage Houston magazine. I am not sure exactly where this road will lead, but I know most certainly it is where I am meant to exist.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
So far it has been a smooth road! Even though I am not an artist, I have a perfect ear for talent. I have learned that people value my opinion and genuinely care to get to know me as a person. As I stated earlier, people naturally gravitate towards me, and I have never met a stranger. I have learned a lot from being the station manager, networking , and just being a music nerd. I may not know everything about the music business, but chances are I know someone who can help me navigate through.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
Professionally I am a registered nurse working in the NICU. That stands for Neonatal Intensive Care Unit and I work with the most fragile tiny humans born before they are supposed to. I wanted to be a nurse from a young age, as nurses want to help people . This profession has helped me use my knowledge of helping people, transcend into the music world. I am most proud of my long standing almost 31 year career, and currently adding networking and station manager to my resume. My friends would say that I am most known for my laugh, as it has almost gotten me in trouble multiple times ,and even almost thrown out of a restaurant. Being able to enter any room with any group of people and just fit in with my personality is probably what sets me apart from others.
Is there anyone you’d like to thank or give credit to?
Every single person I have met along this journey has played a part in where I am at today. I do thank Music in the City HTX and the owner Kael for giving me a chance to join the team. All of the artists I have met, interviewed and supported their artistry has taught me many things, and for all of this I am grateful . This journey is just getting started.
