Today we’d like to introduce you to Megan Che.
Hi megan, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
MTea & Coffee started in 2018 with a simple idea: to create a place where people could enjoy good drinks, feel comfortable, and connect with the community. When we first started, we were learning everything day by day, from creating the menu and training the team to understanding what customers really loved.
Like many small businesses, the journey was not always easy. There were long days, mistakes, changes, and a lot of lessons along the way. But every challenge helped us grow and understand our business better. We learned that consistency, customer service, and listening to our community matter just as much as the drinks themselves.
In 2020, even during a very uncertain time, MTea & Coffee experienced strong growth. We were grateful for the support from our customers, and that encouraged us to keep expanding. Over time, we opened more locations and continued improving our drinks, our service, and the overall experience for our guests.
Today, MTea & Coffee has grown into a local brand with 4 locations in the Sugar Land/Houston/Cypress area. We are proud to serve a variety of milk teas, fruit teas, coffees, and specialty drinks, while continuing to bring new ideas to our menu. What started as one small business has become something much bigger because of our team, our loyal customers, and the community that has supported us from the beginning.
For us, MTea & Coffee is more than just a drink shop. It is a place where people stop by after school, meet friends, study, celebrate, or simply treat themselves. That connection is what keeps us motivated to keep growing and doing better every day.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
It definitely has not always been a smooth road. Like many small businesses, we had to learn through real experience, and sometimes that meant learning the hard way.
One of the biggest challenges was building a strong team and creating consistent service across different locations. In the beginning, we were involved in almost every detail, from the recipes and inventory to training, customer service, and daily operations. As the business grew, we had to learn how to build better systems so each location could deliver the same quality and experience.
Another challenge was navigating the changes in the market, especially during uncertain times. Customer habits changed, costs went up, staffing became harder, and we had to constantly adjust. There were moments when we had to rethink our menu, improve our workflow, and find better ways to serve customers while still keeping the heart of the brand.
But those struggles helped us become stronger. They taught us patience, flexibility, and the importance of listening to both our customers and our team. Every challenge pushed us to improve, and we are grateful because it shaped MTea & Coffee into the business it is today.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
MTea & Coffee is a local Houston-area beverage brand specializing in milk tea, fruit tea, coffee, and creative specialty drinks. We started with the goal of making drinks that are not only refreshing, but also fun, memorable, and made with care.
Our menu includes classic milk teas, fresh fruit teas, Vietnamese coffee, matcha drinks, and seasonal creations. We are especially known for our rich coffee drinks, refreshing fruit teas, and our foam options, including sea salt foam, matcha foam, ube foam, banana foam, pistachio foam, and cheese foam. We like to create drinks that feel familiar but still have something exciting and different. Because apparently people need joy in a cup, and honestly, we agree.
What sets MTea & Coffee apart is the balance between quality, creativity, and community. We are not just trying to sell drinks. We want each location to feel welcoming, whether someone is stopping by after school, meeting friends, studying, taking a break from work, or bringing drinks to a family gathering. Our customers are a big part of why we continue to grow and improve.
We are also proud to offer catering for local events, schools, offices, weddings, and community gatherings. Customers can order ready-made 16 oz drinks, gallon options, and customized drink setups depending on the event. Over time, we have been able to serve not just individual customers, but also larger groups and organizations in the community.
Brand-wise, what we are most proud of is that MTea & Coffee has grown through real support from local customers. We started small, learned as we went, and continued building because people believed in us. Each location reflects the hard work of our team and the loyalty of our community.
What we want readers to know is that MTea & Coffee is more than a drink shop. It is a local brand built with family, hard work, creativity, and a lot of heart. We are still growing, still learning, and always looking for new ways to bring better drinks and better experiences to our customers.
We’d love to hear about how you think about risk taking?
I believe every business owner has to take risks, but I don’t think risk should be careless. For me, risk means making a decision even when everything is not perfect yet, but still having enough faith, preparation, and work ethic to move forward.
Starting MTea & Coffee was already a big risk. We began in 2018 without knowing exactly what the future would look like. We had to invest time, money, energy, and so much patience into something that was still new. There is always fear when you start a business because nothing is guaranteed. You can have a good product, a good idea, and still face challenges with staffing, operations, rent, customer habits, and competition. Business likes to humble people, apparently as a hobby.
One of the biggest risks we took was continuing to grow and open more locations, especially around 2020, when the market was very uncertain. Many people were unsure about the future, but we chose to keep moving forward. It was not easy, but we believed in the brand, our customers, and the demand for what we were building.
I don’t see myself as someone who takes risks just for the excitement. I see risk as part of growth. If we only stay where we feel safe, we may never know what we are capable of building. At the same time, I have learned that risk needs to come with responsibility. You have to study the numbers, understand your customers, build the right team, and be willing to adjust when things do not go as planned.
For me, risk taking has taught patience, resilience, and trust in the process. Some risks are scary in the beginning, but they become important chapters in your story. Without taking those steps, MTea & Coffee would not be where it is today.
