Today we’d like to introduce you to David Davidian, Alexander Laris, Jorge Marmolejo.
Hi David, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
The band’s idea started around the peak of COVID-19, but wasn’t fully realized until 2022 when our first song “Water” released. It started off as two individuals in Sam Houston State University who wanted to make something that stood apart from other groups and sounds. It grew to four members, but after some turbulence, dropped back down to two. It fluctuated for about two years, eventually settling at the current three members: Jorge Marmolejo, Alexander Laris, & David Davidian.
The three members met in Mexico City where, together, they were able to develop the song “57 DEGREES” in only one night. They bonded rather instantaneously, sharing their tastes in music and teaching each other new techniques and ways to play.
Now, with one song nearly finalized on the way and new songs in development, the group has kept its ambitions high.
Strange Matter’s name was imagined during the end of the development of “Water.” The singer, David, had been watching a YouTube video by the science channel “Kurzgesagt – In a Nutshell” that covered the subject of strange matter itself. The themes of space added with the mystery of the substance had a certain aura that captured the music’s identity, and the name eventually stuck.
The uniqueness of Strange Matter as the band developed was and is its willingness to experiment and combine other genres and styles of music while still staying consistent with its own individual voice.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It has certainly been a bumpy road, but always ultimately rewarding and worth it, as all journeys generally are.
Initially, we struggled with finding “our sound,” so to speak. We had the desire but our skillset was still developing. We are always developing. In the beginning, it would not be unfair to label ourselves as novices. Everyone starts somewhere, though.
There were also issues surrounding the spotlight. After adding members, the distribution of credit became more difficult to separate. At the beginning there was a rule of “everyone has equal say.” This rule was often tested when certain ideas were pushed. Eventually, though, a balance was struck, and compromise has become a healthy part of the band’s nature.
The excitement, joy, and goodness that comes with releasing a new track or playing in front of an audience will always make it worth it. Creating music that resonates with people is what makes our lives meaningful.
Strange Matter has faced multiple lineup changes, along with both discouraging and uplifting times.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
We try to focus on making a unique, experimental, yet appealing sound. One that can pull from multiple genres on a whim. We also like to have a sort of psychedelic aesthetic that matches with space. Colorful but intentional. We want to play live, make more music, and try a revolutionize sound in a way many other great artists have done before us and are doing now.
Where do you see things going in the next 5-10 years?
Music has always been changing. Before streaming you’d have to listen on an iPod. Before then, it was Cd players and cassettes you’d play in the car or attach to your hip. Before that, it was vinyl, and before that you were just lucky enough to listen to music on the radio or live.
In 5-10 years, the truth is AI will be more dominant than we’d like unless guard rails are placed. Already, we’re seeing people use AI to generate music under multiple fake artists and then have bots stream those songs on smaller, undetectable levels. It allows them to collect revenue without actually developing the art or “content.” This takes away from many real artists who only see a fraction of a cent per stream.
As Strange Matter, we hope to create much more music, eventually tour, and develop a strong and credible name/reputation for ourselves both as a group in the industry and as individual artists who are seeking meaning, fun, and passion.
Other goals include: creating a record label, help develop other aspiring artists, branch out into other arts like Film/television, writing novels, and other mediums.
