Meet Debi Starr of Starr Art

Today we’d like to introduce you to Debi Starr.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Debi. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I love to paint! I love blending colors, showing textures and expressing emotions with a paintbrush, a palette knife, or even a spatula. Art supply stores are dangerous. I PAINT EVERYTHING! I always have. Pet portraits, figurative works, seascapes, florals and abstracts are just a sampling. I also do murals and decorative painting commercially as well as residentially and have painted many of the Seabrook Pelicans, too. I also teach art, all mediums! This vast variety may make it seem like I am all over the place. Well, I am. But, that’s what keeps it interesting and fresh.

Most artists have a particular style, subject matter, or shtik. I love my versatility. I guess my shtick is just being me. I started this journey as a child. I always wanted to be an artist and never strayed from that path. I went to Houston’s High School for the Performing & Visual Arts before heading to the Art Institute of Chicago. I graduated Magna Cum Laude from Houston Baptist University with a BFA and a teaching certification in Art Education. I am a full-time professional artist and art teacher. I have my work in galleries, participate in art shows and competitions and paint tons of commissioned pieces for decorators and clients.

Has it been a smooth road?
I was fortunate to have my own gallery/studio for a couple of years but had to close it for personal reasons. It was hard because I loved the space, the great natural light and promoting other local artist’s work. However, it was a blessing in disguise… the place that was once my gallery/studio flooded during Hurricane Harvey and is still completely gutted today. Not owning my own gallery has pushed me more to get my work shown in other galleries and venues. I am definitely stronger now in self-promotion.

So, as you know, we’re impressed with Starr Art – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
I paint custom pieces. A decorator can show me colors, fabrics and furnishings for a client and I can create an amazing work of art to complete the room! It may be an abstract that tells a story, a painting of a beloved pet or a favorite vacation spot. The piece may pertain to a certain affection for wine, music or sailing. I can also transform a wall or a whole room by painting a mural or a decorative finish. My versatility is my specialty!

Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
I like the diversity of our city including dining, music and art. However, I don’t like the traffic.
