Today we’d like to introduce you to Oluronke Famodimu.
Hi Oluronke, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
Hi, my name is Oluronke, the head makeup artist behind Gemstouch Studio. I’m also a photographer called Gemshotit and the founder of our luxurious perfume oil collection called Gemsscents.
My journey into beauty started in secondary school with hairstyling. During holidays, I would watch my sister do her makeup, and I became fascinated by the creativity and transformation that makeup could bring. Over time, that curiosity grew into a true passion, and today I’m proud to say I’ve grown enough in the industry to now train my sister as well.
My first major makeup project was for a bride visiting from the U.S. while I was in college. Although I was nervous at the time, the experience was incredibly rewarding and confirmed that beauty was something I genuinely loved. Seeing the confidence and happiness my work brought to someone else inspired me to take my craft more seriously.
I believe makeup should make people feel confident, comfortable, and look like the best version of themselves. Every client receives a personalized experience, and for me, the greatest reward is seeing people leave feeling beautiful and confident.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
One of the biggest struggles I’ve faced as a makeup artist is managing client expectations especially when contracts aren’t fully read. I once had a bride remove bridesmaids’ hair services from the package to reduce the price, but on the wedding day they still expected me to do everyone’s hair for free. When I explained that it wasn’t included in the contract, one of the bridesmaids got upset and even called me stupid. At that point, I was trying to stay professional while mentally reminding myself I’m a makeup artist, not a miracle worker. 😂
Another challenge is home services. Some clients hear “travel fee” and suddenly think I’ve become a celebrity makeup artist overnight. I had a client ask me to drive over an hour to her house, and when I explained the home service and travel fee, she called me greedy. What people don’t always realize is that while I’m driving, I’m losing valuable booking time with other clients. So the fee is not just for gas it’s for time, convenience, and bringing the glam experience directly to them.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I’m the owner and lead artist behind GEMSTOUCH Studio, where I specialize in professional makeup artistry, bridal glam, soft glam looks, microblading, hairstyling, photography, and luxury perfume oils. My passion for beauty started from hairstyling back in secondary school, and over time it grew into a full creative business centered around helping people feel confident and beautiful in their own skin.
I’m mostly known for creating clean, elegant looks that enhance natural beauty rather than overpower it. I also pride myself on professionalism, punctuality, and creating a comfortable experience for my clients whether it’s a bridal session, photoshoot glam, or a regular appointment.
What I’m most proud of is building my brand from passion and consistency. I’ve been able to turn something I genuinely love into a business that allows me to connect with people, boost their confidence, and express my creativity in different ways.
What sets me apart is that I don’t just see beauty as makeup alone I see it as an experience. From makeup to photography to luxury scents, I love creating moments that make people feel special. I’m also very detail-oriented and time conscious, which helps me deliver quality work while maintaining professionalism, even in high-pressure environments like weddings and events.
Networking and finding a mentor can have such a positive impact on one’s life and career. Any advice?
One thing that has worked well for me is being intentional about building genuine relationships instead of only networking when I need something. In the beauty industry, people remember your attitude, professionalism, and consistency just as much as your talent.
I’ve learned that social media can be a powerful networking tool when used correctly. Posting your work consistently, engaging with other creatives, supporting people’s businesses, and showing your personality helps attract the right opportunities and connections. A lot of people connect with you first as a person before they even become clients.
When it comes to finding a mentor, my advice is to look for someone whose work ethic and values you genuinely admire not just someone who is popular online. Pay attention to how they treat clients, handle pressure, and run their business. Also, don’t be afraid to ask questions and learn from people around you. Sometimes mentorship comes from simple conversations and observing others closely.
Most importantly, stay humble and open to learning. In my experience, consistency, professionalism, and respecting people’s time will open more doors than talent alone.
